Yesterday morning (Tuesday 11-26) I was finishing a 5-day road trip (Albuquerque for lunch with Erich and FishBait, Flagstaff AZ, Las Vegas NV, Grand Junction CO, then home to Pueblo CO). Driving east on US 50 about 30 miles west of Gunnison CO in moderate snow, roads lightly snow-packed, using 4WD and maintaining a modest speed consistent with good control. Vehicle in the westbound lane lost control on a curve, fishtailed and corrected, ending up coming directly at me in my lane with maybe 500 feet between us (at a closure speed of ~50MPH, maybe a second to make my decisions).

My choices were to accept a head-on collision (my speed about 25 or so, her speed 30 or so), or take the shoulder and steep embankment. I chose to steer for the shoulder, leaving my lane wide open for her.

Left front of her vehicle struck at my left rear wheel and quarter panel, knocking me sideways off the road and about 25-30 feet down the embankment in deep snow. No rollover, but stopped at a steep angle making it a chore to get out of the truck.

Her vehicle stopped on the roadway perpendicular to the eastbound traffic lane. I asked if she was OK, she piddled with her cell phone, then said she had a child in the car and needed to take care of him. I fired up the cell phone and made connection to 911 operator, then I was able to read off her license plate number while she drove away (leaving only 30 or 40 lbs. of debris from her front end at my feet)!

I spent the next hour standing in a snowstorm on the side of the road, then a US Parks Police Officer stopped as an assist to local authorities. Colorado State Patrol stopped the hit & run driver 5 or 6 miles to the west, still driving away. 3 hours later, and a $512 wrecker bill to recover my truck, I was back on the road. Moderate damage, some mechanical issues due to alignment being jacked up by dragging sideways down the slope. Stopped overnight in Salida rather than trying the Arkansas River canyon at night with alignment problems.

The miracles mentioned? Here they are:

Miracle #1: I was able to avoid a head-on collision with a goofy broad driving too fast on a mountain road during a snowstorm while her baby was not secured in a proper car seat.

Miracle #2: Despite suspended driver license, bogus license plates, and operating an unregistered automobile, the goofy girl actually had CAR INSURANCE! Just got off the phone with her insurance company, expecting an adjuster to visit within the next few days.

Young woman may be explaining herself to a judge in the coming weeks; hit& run, failure to give information & aid, suspended license, misuse of license plates, operating an unregistered vehicle, no child restraint seat, maybe a few other extraneous charges. She could have been booked into jail, but that would require placing the child with Social Services (a judgement by the Trooper that I must agree with).

This story could have had any number of less pleasant endings, so I will spend tomorrow being truly thankful to have another Thanksgiving with my family.

First off, glad you are ok, things can be replaced and all that.

Second, seems to be a common occurrence, at least around here, nowadays. Someone runs into you, mostly rear end collisions, they see you exit your car and immediately take off.

I have a front end dashcam and am about to get another to cover my back side.

Glad you are ok. The worthlessness of some individuals today never ceases to amaze me. She needs to do a little time for her actions but I doubt it will do her any good.

I just call them OPC (other peoples' children), and I accept no responsibility for how they were raised or how they behave.

There will always be another OPC.

Glad you came out okay! Unfortunately unlicensed, unregistered, and uninsured drivers are becoming more common than less. Very glad you found she had insurance. I've dealt with people who had all of the above violations too often. I tried to ticket them before they got in collisions (ran tags and found violations I could stop them for) but there are just too many to keep up with.

I agree with you. Miracles do happen. You could've been very seriously injured and she would've just driven off. Glad you're okay and came away with just damage to the vehicle.

Similar situation happened to my neighbor. Ditzy broad rear-ended him and started to drive off. He simply stated, "I've already taken a picture of your license plate and for you to leave the scene of an accident is automatic jail time." She decided she'd better stay there until the police arrived.

She didn't have insurance and it wasn't even her car. It was her roommate's.

Can we all say "Irresponsible"? Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be that uncommon anymore.

Have a happy Thanksgiving and give thanks. Glad you came out as well as you did, the bullet didn't have your name on it and things are replaceable.

Wow Ray! Quite an adventure. Sure glad you're okay. I may have to change my screen name to Fishbait in your honor. :) As always, it was great to visit and enjoy good food.

Sorry about that, my friend. Maybe a Freudian slip related to your suggestion of sushi for lunch, and my reply suggesting that a sushi restaurant is the same as a bait shop?

Surviving a scary collision on a snowy road, having the presence of mind to photograph the other driver's plate, seeing that the hit-and-run driver had safely been taken into custody, and avoiding serious or even fatal injury are all well and good, Lobo, and worthy of Thanksgiving gratitude.

But what about what we really want to know: who had picked up the tab for lunch? :D

Erich was the host. I think he may have showed up early and made a deal with the staff to allow him to have his way.

For the curious, the Smith & Wesson Forum Lunch Club has been convening in Albuquerque, New Mexico over the past several months. Lots of great places to eat and local members to guide us to the best. Some minor level of competition has arisen when it is time to pay the check, so we may have to work out a system that provides fair opportunity to all.

To get on the list PM LoboGunLeather, Erich, or Shark Bait (hope I got that right after all the confusion caused by my mental association of sushi with bait). As the charter members we serve as the Board of Directors and Entertainment Committee pending fair and impartial elections (I think those might be legal in New Mexico).

Just like a good poker game or hunting trip, the first liar never stands a chance.
