Anyone for a BIG cup of "Unintended consequences" ?

Pardon me for not reading the proposed legislation. I doubt it would get through the Senate or be signed by the president.

In Washington during the 1990s a pet donkey in a privately owned animal petting zoo was killed by a couple of young men who climbed the fence in the middle of the night and beat it with 2X4s they'd hammered long nails through. Our animal cruelty law was passed as a result of the publicity. I'll give one example of the law's early enforcement.

An 18 year old man living with his girl was told by their landlord to either get rid of the stray cat they adopted or get out. They could not afford to relocate. Naturally the girl assigned the deed to her man. To drown it he wadded out into the lake and threw it out away from him. It repeatedly swam back and he kept tossing it away. Horrified onlookers called the police. He got a felony animal cruelty conviction. The judge said there would have been no crime if he'd killed the cat quickly so essentially his crime was not knowing how to kill a cat.

I do not think that society is better off with him being blocked from numerous careers that require licenses. Nearly all the other cases that I've read about were also ones I thought should not have been prosecuted. A federal law would be the same.

(1) the term ‘animal crushing’ means actual conduct in which one or more living non-human mammals, birds, reptiles, or amphibians is purposely crushed, burned, drowned, suffocated, impaled, or otherwise subjected to serious bodily injury (as defined in section 1365 and including conduct that, if committed against a person and in the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States, would violate section 2241 or 2242);

So all you snake killers beware!:D

Sure glad that ex post facto laws aren't allowed. I have been known to decapitate a rattler or two with a shovel.

Sorry. Doubt no more.

This became law after being signed by the President on November 25, 2019.
Thank-you for the correction.

Sooner or later they'll just outlaw breathing then only enforce the law when members of the other political party violate it.

First: one has to ask were the consequences unintended?

Second: If what potentially could happen does happen, this shows the problem with legislation by emotion. Its the "something has to be done" mentality without thinking the issue through. BUT, behind most emotional legislation there is someone/some group who are thinking and are manipulating the legislation behind the scenes using emotion to get bills passed that otherwise would not be considered.

This is the same logic (or lack thereof) that is employed by the anti-gun groups.

I read through it a couple times and I think what will tie up most court time is Section f(2)b, definitions. The courts have been trying to define "obscene" longer than most of you have been alive.
