What is your Favorite Gun?

Ever since I shot one, the Colt Officer's Model Special (4th issue) has been high on my list of "gotta have" revolvers. The majority of my collection is postwar, pre-1957 S&W revolvers, but this Colt model really is "special". Here is the 22lr version (right) with its 38 special sibling. Both made around 1949-50. Both acquired this year. The 22 is lights out the most accurate revolver I own. A friend of mine who is a competitive shooter can shoot a small ragged hole at 25 yards with this gun. Though I can't come close to that, I do shoot it better than any other gun I own. If I had to choose a favorite S&W, it would be my Model of 1950, pre-26, or maybe....

I can't narrow it down to just one. These are three of my favorites.The first is a transitional Heavy Duty with a pre-war 5" barrel. It belonged to a very good friend of mine's father who died about 40 years ago. He approached me about a year ago and wanted to know if I would be interested in trading it for my Winchester model 71 that he had been lusting after for several years. It had a set of Plastic "Stagrips". Had bigmountainman fab these Elk horn grips that look great and feel fantastic.
The second is a 44 mag shipped in late '57 that is very easy on the eyes that I purchase for $550 way back in the day.
The third is a 44 mag shipped in early '57. Bought it in about 2005.
I have others, but these are at the top.

My favorite is not one that I would expect. I like older blue guns with long barrels and nowadays, wood stocks. My favorite is shown below.

It's the Model 629-3 Mountain Gun that I bought brand new in 1993, not the M29-2. Even though it's stainless, even though it's just a 4" barrel, even though it wears Pachmayr rubber grips, even though it's not in the 1896-1961 category. The Compac Pro grip on the round butt grip frame fits my hand better than just about anything and makes even full-house loads easy to shoot. By comparison the target grips on the blue M29 are pretty to look at but miserable to use, even with the added weight of the untapered barrel.

I find it a great all-around gun. It's for shootin', not for lookin' at.

Really difficult to choose one.
My first choice, and the one that brought me to this group is my 4" 1905 Target in 38 Spl. Not collector grade in many eyes, primarily because it lacks all blue. It was originally shipped to one of the infamous Hatfield clan, who was later killed in an ambush sparked by a dispute over bootlegging territory. Since it now resides in Texas, it seems only fitting that it sports ivory steerhead stocks and a carved Brill holster.

My favorite revolver? Easy. Little Model 18-3 that I bought in 2000. Paid $325 to an acquaintance who had cancer and wanted to sell some guns. Very fine little pistol. God only knows how many bricks of .22 LR ammo I have fired in that revolver! For many years I fired about a brick a week ... sometimes more. Got to where I could hold 2 inch groups SA and ... with a lot of work ... 2.5-3.0 inch groups DA at 25 yds. That will really really improve your shooting with Glock pistols! It is my most favorite, most shot, most enjoyed revolver. Other revolvers I will choose and use for other purposes that require a heavier caliber. But, for general out and about shooting at anything and everything from paper targets to cans and pine cones ... I will without second thought select that beautiful little Model 18 ... and a brick of good .22 LR ammunition ... and head out the door. Sincerely. bruce.

I have a nice modest collection of S&W revolvers but this model 10-5 was my first and has been a companion for over 50 years. Given to me on my 16th birthday by a mentor, my best friend’s father, it’s always in the shooting bag.

Benelli Super Black Eagle II semi-auto 12 gauge, hands down. Sold my K22 mint Outdoorsman to buy it, with no regrets. Triples on teal and quail are made simple with it. It serves more purposes than any other gun I have. Don't hunt deer with it, but I could if had to. Skeet is fun practice.

No way for me to pick a favorite S&W. I like too many of them.

Favorite is tough. I have pretty eclectic tastes from wheel guns to “assault weapons” to .22’s

I try to get rid of any that aren’t up to snuff so I guess the remainders are all my favorites?

I have several guns, 10's, K38, 15's, 17, 18, 19 pre23, 25, 27, 28's, 29, 629, but I guess I am drawn to the M28. I guess it is the no nonsense working man's sidearm that attracts me

My Target TL. Freshly back from the range today. 6 rounds in the nose of the Evil Clown (shooting with the kids again). My TLs always give me great results .

Between the 11 and 13 year olds, they zipped through 200 rounds with the RAMI.

Bruce that is a cool gun, I see why it is a favorite with a history like that. I am a professional transmission rebuilder here in SC. a couple of years ago I rebuilt a transmission for one of the Hatfield women, but no guns were involved or pointed at me, thank God,,,,,,,,,,,

That's an easy choice, the 1911 that my ladies great uncle carried in WW1 as a fighter pilot. It came home with his body when he was killed and sat for 99 years. It was made in 1912 is the best fitting 1911 I have ever come across old or new.

My current favorite is revolver many wouldn’t give a second look. It’s a “plain ol’ vanilla” 4” Model 64 HB. It had some bad scars on the top strap when I got it but mechanically it was nice and tight. I took a strip of 120 grit sandpaper and ran it across the top strap to level the metal but still left a dull finish. For some reason I just really like this gun. I bought a wadcutter mold for it and can’t wait to cast some up and shoot them. I expect 3gr or so of Bullseye should be a kitten to shoot and group well.

I'd have to say this 1960 4-screw Highway Patrolman (thanks again, Leonard) is my current favorite. It was a HP that got me interested in S&W revolvers a decade or so ago and it remains my favorite model. I'd be more interested in the .44s if I lived out west but .357 Magnum is plenty medicine for anything I might encounter here in Michigan.
