Who’s carrying a revolver these days? Let’s show them off...

I started my LEO career in 1983, so Revolvers were still the standard back then. Revolvers are still all I carry. Been carrying these two Rugers lately with the LCR .327 Federal Magnum loaded with Speer 100 grain GDHP now being my EDC. Glad there are still plenty of us Revolver Guys here!

Is that an 8 shot speed strip, if so, where did you find it?

This is my revolver rotation. Currently 637-1 in a desantis summer heat holster. I like 640 no dash or 642 performance center in a sticky holster, or 640-1 as my winter carry.

I use to carry a Glock 27, but I never felt too comfortable with a striker fired pistol.

I swapped out the ambi safety on my 6906 to a sigle sideed one to make it more slim, but I've yet to find a holster for it that I can stand to wear long. My most comfortable Glock 27 holster actually fits my 6906 perfect...square trigger guard, but I don't like that much of the slide being exposed. I love the 6906 just because of the de-cock feature.

Been carrying my trusty 642-1 for a couple years now.

Depends on the load. Most commercial 32 H&R Mag rounds are limited in power - and so in recoil - to the strength of the original H&R guns, which were stronger than the original S&W 32 Long top break revolvers from the 19th century, but not much if any stronger than the contemporary 32 Hand Ejectors. These rounds are considerably lower recoil than most 38 Special rounds from a similar size gun.

For future reference, among "ordinary" 32 H&R rounds from a 2" M432 the Hornady 80g JHP round recorded 978fps/170 ft lbs of energy, the Federal 85g JHP recorded 893fps/151 ft lbs, the Black Hills 85g JHP recorded 915fps/158 ft lbs, and the Federal 95g LSWC recorded 892fps/168 ft lbs.

The Buffalo Bore 32 H&R 100g +P, though, is a different animal. These rounds are marked on the box as NOT for use in H&R revolvers, but are safe in any other "modern" guns chambered for 32 H&R. I also have a 30-1 and a 31-1 which have been reamed from 32 Long to take 32 H&R, and Buffalo Bore has advised that their 100g +P round is safe "for unlimited use" in those guns, too. (I don't know about their 130g +P hard cast flat nose - I didn't ask about that one.)

For the Buffalo Bore +P 100g I recorded 1100fps/269 ft lbs of energy from a 2" M432, and 1234fps/338 ft lbs from a 3" 31-1 (on a different day). For comparison, Remington's 38 Special 158g LSWCHP +P load recorded 820fps/236 ft lbs of energy from a 2" M49 (on a still different day).

From a 2" J frame, the 32 Mag 100g +P Buffalo Bore round is just as unpleasant to shoot as the slightly less powerful Remington's 38 Special 158g +P, even when shot from a steel frame 30-1 instead of the airweight 432. The Buffalo Bore round was extremely accurate out of the 432, but is too uncomfortable and too expensive (~$1.50/round) for me to shoot very often.

The hotter 32 mag loads are like standard pressure 38 Special loads in a 442 or other airweight J frame.

The lighter 32 mag loads have very light recoil. Almost don't notice the recoil.

Shooting 32 Long feels like a 22lr.

Thank you so much! My wife wants a j frame sized revolver but even 38s are too snappy for her. Might try to find one of these 32s.

FYI, S&W doesn't make any 32s any more, at least not on a continuous basis. I got a S&W 432 from Buds several years ago after being on a Notify Me list for a long time. I ordered within an hour of getting the email that they were available, and I think they were all gone within a day or two. S&W may make a new run from time to time, but it appears to be something they don't advertise if they do. I have my name on a Notify Me list at Bud's for both a 431 (airweight 32 H&R exposed hammer) and 632 (stainless 327 Federal internal hammer) just in case.

You can get a new Ruger LCR or SP101 in 327 Federal. They will also take 32 H&R and 32 Long. (The 327 Federal is a VERY nasty round in its full power form, up there with lower end 357 Magnum rounds in felt recoil, and the loudest handgun I've ever shot, but H&R and Long rounds should be fine in one.)

You can also get a S&W 30 or 31 in 32 Long, and have it reamed to take 32 H&R for <$100. The H&R round is not much more powerful than the 32 Long, and there's plenty of meat in the J frame cylinder to handle even the hottest H&R loads. After all, they use the same size cylinder with much thinner chamber walls for 38 and 357 guns.

The 30 and 31 are steel frame blued guns with exposed hammers but no internal lock. They may be easier to find on the used market than 32 H&R-marked S&Ws. They may or may not be eligible for S&W's lifetime warranty, and reaming them to 32H&R might void that warranty anyway. However, I sent my 432 into S&W for a warranty repair, where they condemned it as unrepairable and had no 32 caliber anythings to offer as a replacement. I ended up taking a 357 magnum instead, but I lost the 32 caliber gun. (I did manage to find another 432 online, but it took a while.) I would be concerned that sending ANY 32 caliber gun back to S&W would risk losing it, and have resolved not to do it again if I can find any other alternative.

Just to participate in the actual point of this thread: most common daily carry is a S&W 632 with a Crimson Trace boot grip, in a Lobo enhanced pancake with Buffalo Bore 100g +P JHPs. Six spares in a speed strip, in a pouch that I forget who made.

It's no fun to shoot with that grip and ammo, but luckily the ammo is too expensive to practice with very much (and I have not found any way to reload for less $ that comes near the BB velocity.) So I mostly practice with reloads that duplicate a Georgia Arms 100g load - still not a lot of fun, but when my hand gets sore I switch to a steel 32 (either a 30-1 or 31-1) with big cushy grips.

Here's my EDC: a Model 38-0 with a nickeled cylinder (my version of the MSP back up gun) and a Model 638-1. I usually pocket carry and use DeSantis Nemesis holsters. I load with standard velocity ammo and carry a loaded speed strip.

Regards,

Dave
