In a way, it reminds me of stories told by a friend that was an undercover NYC transit cop on the subways. He'd find a woman wearing gold chains on her neck, seated next to a Subway car door. Then he'd wait for the chain to get snatched and grab the robber fleeing out the door.
Nowadays it's iPhones getting snatched as well.

That's the misguided thinking on the part of a lot of folks I've had discussions with who open-carry.

They seem to believe that bad guys are as impressed by that gun on their hip as they themselves are. Obviously, if they feel badass carrying the gun, the bad guys must see them the same way.

Doesn't work that way. Since experienced folks generally don't open-carry, it's looks more like a dork with a neon sign blinking "Free gun!" to any hardcase not afraid of a bit of physical violence.

In these discussions I always point at the number of assaults on cops by unarmed suspects every day. And in contrast to most civilians, officers don't just open-carry guns, but pepper spray and batons and are trained.

You're exactly right, but you'll never convince those civilians with incredibly poor judgement making the potentially dangerous decision to carry an exposed firearm.

I remember it being drilled into us in the Academy, that we were carrying around community property and it belonged to whoever got hold of it and out of the holster first. Constant awareness was essential. To be honest, it doesn't appear that most people exercise ANY situational awareness at all and that can be fatal when carrying a firearm, but particularly when open carrying.

More blatant attacks against the open carry crowd.

Look, there are right and WRONG ways to open carry. This demonstrates the wrong way to go about it.

But someone who knows what they’re doing with a good retendor, is a well and responsibly armed citizen. I’ve noticed more open carrying than ever now that the virus craziness has kicked off. I have no problem with it.

Hoplophobia and coddling the weak and easily frightened members of society are no reason to disarm oneself from open carrying a firearm. There are RIGHT ways to do it, otherwise Law Enforcement would never do it.

Soooo sick of these anti gun threads.

Title of the thread should read, "Why you need to exhibit complete situational awareness at all times while open carrying."

Open carry isn't stupid or inadvisable. Blaming open carry for something like this instead of THE PERSON who was open carrying is the same anti gun logic used to blame violence on the types of firearms used instead of THE PERSON who perpetrated the crime.

You don't blame the AR15 when there's a mass shooting, do you? No! You blame the person!

Awareness and education is key, and sharing these types of articles is key to understanding. But some people here need to seriously cut down on the anti gun rhetoric.

This isn't all directed at OP, but anyone it's applicable to.

What then is the end result of this situation?

The bad guys got arrested and the "victim" lost his gun probably forever as it's all locked up in evidence.:D

What should he have done or not done?

Anyone here see "Blazing Saddles?"

Well, that's how fast I am so I qualify
as a responsbile open carry chap.

I doubt any of the rest of you are. So
if you carry, do so concealed. It gives
you an edge of possible surprise that
open carry doesn't---unless you're
faster than lightning which I am. :p

This is one of the most rediculous posts I've read in a long time. There's no anti-gun sentiment contained in the previous posts, just anti ill conceived behaviour.

Best regards,

Best regards,
Regarding gun rights and carry rights you're either all in or you fold. There is no caveat, and no, you can't check down to see a free flop.

Your idea of anti gun/anti carry is quite different than mine. I implore you to think beyond the simple terms and examine the underlying biases and prejudices.

With rights come responsibilities, so it is incumbent on the responsible citizen to act and exercise those rights responsibly. I'm not anti gun or anti carry, just anti inappropriate/stupid behaviour.

Best regards,
