The article says mild to moderate cases are in the trial. That's probably because when they trialed it on severe cases, it made them worse.
My daughter was on the phone with me for hours last night, wracked with guilt because she talked my cousin into being a guinea pig for the same drugs being studied, when he was admitted to the VA hospital.
He didn't want to take the stuff, but my daughter felt enlightened by what was being pushed in news conferences, and she talked him into it. He worsened and died as soon as he took the trial drugs, and she's sure it's her fault.
I hope we get better suggestions to influence medical decisions.

We all should make medical decisions with family and our doctors.

My wife and I were just talking about this while sitting in the hot tub last night - wondering whatever happened to the trials that they were planning for this proposed treatment.

I was wondering about the Gilead trials too - especially given how promising the initial tests were looking.

We never seem to hear anything but the most negative info regarding this virus from the media.

Definitely a facetious reference to main stream media distortions of comments high profile individuals have made regarding hypothetical avenues of treatment research.

No offense taken. I'm aware that my very large extended family in a heavily affected region has unfortunately been stricken more than most. I only wish that I might be helpful to those here that may face the same circumstances we've faced.
My pre-retirement age infected family have survived, but my aunt and cousin that passed from this virus are the same senior age demographic as the majority here, so I'm praying our group avoids this virus rather than have to fight it.

bigwheelzip, I am so sorry your daughter is so distraught! I have no idea what shape your cousin was in upon entering hospital. But it reminded me of when I went through Paramedic training in the early 70's. I studied under the finest ER doctor I ever met. We were taught to do intubation, defibrillation, IV therapy, pleural decompression, cricothyroid opening with scalpels to create an airway and many more procedures. We were very hesitant about doing some of these things. But at almost every class the Doctor would tell us, "if you don't do it the patient will die". We took it to heart and hopefully saved a few patients. Perhaps that was the situation with your cousin and your daughter's advice.

Yes, it was intended as a joke to the various posters who have made fun of a certain public figure.
Looks like it didn't translate well.
No one should make any healthcare decisions without consultation with family and physicians.
 
Controlled trial is the way to go, not anecdotal instances from around the country.
FWIW, my wife has been taking hydroxychloroquine for years for rheumatoid arthritis, with no ill effects.

Does it work against covid-19?

Is it contraindicated with azithromycin?

Is there a measureable degree of morbidity at which using the combo is useful or effective, or a level of morbidity beyond which it is ineffective or harmful?

We haven't quantified any of this AFAIK.

Yes, my brother also recovered after being given that drug cocktail, but he's only in his mid-60s. My cousin that passed after taking it was in his early 80's. That may make a difference.

As with a lot of illnesses, earlier treatment is better (IMHO). There are so many success stories of people defeating it with different treatments. If it were me laying in that bed getting worse by the hour I hope I would say do anything and everything that will keep me off a ventilator. My daughter is working right now in a hospital in NJ. She has seen the goods and bads of this disease. Bottom line is that being ventilated is not good and the outcomes VERY bad news (statistically). Just my humble opinion here.
