On My Way to the Land of Enchantment -- Deming, New Mexico!

Next to Arizona, I love New Mexico. We've lived in Albuquerque, and one of my daughters and her husband live in Las Cruces. We've driven through Deming many times, and I'm pretty sure we've eaten at Irma's. One warning - beware of Hatch green chili! You will need a fire extinguisher!

Here are some photos I've taken from around the Las Cruces area. This first one is of the Organ Mountains - East of Las Cruces, and South of White Sands. My maternal grandfather once prospected there at the turn of the 20th Century.

Southwest sunsets tend to be spectacular. This one was taken last December from my daughter and son-in-law's home in Las Cruces. It overlooks the Rio Grande valley from the East.

One of my granddaughters was recently married in Santa Fe. This is a shot of the Native American vendors who camp out on the walkway in front of the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, and a plaque there explaining the significance of that building.

The State Capitol in Santa Fe is worth seeing. This is the ceiling of the rotunda there. Very striking.

I took this picture of the oldest house in Santa Fe - it dates from the 1600s:

New Mexico has a fascinating history. If you find the time, Google the "Bisbee Deportation." In 1917, the Sheriff of Bisbee, Arizona, kicked a whole bunch of militant union copper miners out of town, put them on a train, told them to never return, and sent them off East to, of all places - Deming New Mexico. My maternal grandfather was one of the Sheriff's posse that rounded up the deportees.

I think you'll like New Mexico - travel around the state, and I know you'll enjoy it.

Speaking of Sheriffs….heading East on highway 70 out of Las Cruces, you'll find a memorial along the highway for the site where Pat Garrett was killed. If you're not aware, Garrett was famous for killing Billy the Kid. A lot of "old west" history in NM.

On another note, while in college, my father rented an apartment in Las Cruces from a descendant of Pat Garrett...I think it was a daughter or granddaughter. That was in the 50's and he said she was pretty old and a widow....and not a nice person haha

NM is like any other place, there is both good and bad there. But from the standpoint of scenery and history, it truly is an enchanting and very diverse place. It takes time to sort it all out. Few places there that I haven't seen at least once. For me, some of the most enchanting places are the ones that seem the most barren and God forsaken. A lot depends on the time of day that you are viewing New Mexico from anywhere!

Here is a photo from outside Albuquerque heading east on I-40...an old abandoned camp called Carlito Springs, now a park.

And this is City of Rocks park down by Silver City.

We just took a little overnight trip from ABQ down to Cruces. The original plan was to eat lunch at the General Store Cafe in Hillsboro, then take the back way down to Hatch. Unfortunately, the Cafe had to close early since they ran out of propane.

Why am I posting this? Well, we ended up eating a late lunch at the Pepper Pot in Hatch. I posted earlier that if you go there to take cash. However, they are now taking plastic, and the food is still excellent.

Well, I arrived last Saturday night and moved in on Sunday. Today is Thursday (the 14th) and I am at the Library in Deming using a public computer. My internet connection at home won't be active until Monday at which point I will start posting more.

This place is great. My house is on the last street of a little development on the southeast side of Deming (see Post #1) and I have an unobstructed view of the Florida Mountains about seven miles to the east. Not one structure to obscure the view.

Tuesday evening there was a rainstorm just before sunset, and with the sun and clouds behind me to the west, the play of light and shadow on the mountains was just spectacular!

Oh. And the quail. They come right in the back yard inside my wall, and they are huge. I've already told my friend Paul back in Virginia to just bring his bathrobe, slippers, coffee mug, and 12 gauge SxS and he can hunt his favorite game bird right out the sliders in my new living room.

I start work officially on Monday, the 18th, so this week it is a lot of running around dealing with getting the utilities switched over, a new DL and tags, and so forth.

I've been making it a point to eat lunch at Irma's, the best Mexican restaurant in town. The salsa verde is wonderful. I am thinking about a run up to Hatch this afternoon to get some green chilis and make up a batch at home.

You guys are great. I will be in touch. Via con Dios!
