Another sign of the times, the end of a tradition that spanned three centuries.
Our neighbor, Furman University, announced that due to financial problems related to the pandemic, their Baseball program, established in 1896, and Lacrosse program will end, along with 45 associated scholarships.
It seems the world's uncertainty has lowered incoming Freshman class numbers by at least 15 percent, with an impact expected to carry on for years.

i'm sorry if this hurt you, zip.
for my, i'd be ever so happy to see sports die at my
alma mater.

i can still remember looking at my tuition bills.
every semester, the school charged $140
for sports fees.
i never went to a game.
nevr wanted to.
but the school got $280/year from every student to pay for perks for jocks.
i hated them.

I remember my 1 year stint at Purdue. We were forced to eat Grade Z caf food (no cooking in the dorms) and I recall finding a roach in my spaghetti sauce.

The football team, OTOH got STEAK. On my dime.

Sorry to hear that, ‘Zip. Never heard of Furman, but after 125 years, surely a storied tradition. Gotta hurt for the local community of fans after all those years, to say nothing of the prospects and current athletes and their families.

Say, Purdue is fairly big time football, no? Big Ten. A money maker for the college, I betcha. I bet the players ate/eat steak, but I doubt that students’ tuition subsidizes their meals. I bet Purdue, if its like every other big time football school, makes money off the program.

Baseball is going to be hurting on every level.

It is thought that many minor league teams won't survive. Even if the bigs play without fans, and reap the rewards of TV contracts, this opportunity doesn't exist for the minors. contrary to what many believe, most farm teams aren't owned by the MLB teams they supply, and a year without fans in the bleachers will kill many of them off.

No up and coming talent from A, AA, and AAA ball, and the majors will also be suffering.

I hate the Chinese virus for many reasons, but the impending death of baseball is the thing that makes me the maddest.

Probably, not that any of it made it back to us.

I am a big time fan of college sports...

...and proud to admit it. :) The University of Maryland is my alma mater and my fav college team...all sports.

I have eight season tickets for men’s basketball, two for women’s lacrosse, and four for football plus partnership in a suite for football and men’s lax.

Plus I donate a significant amount of money each year beyond the price of tix and the suite including funding a naming opportunity in the new women’s lax and field hockey complex. Not stating this to brag but rather to show I put my money where my big mouth is. :p

I am happy to support my university.

But here is a FACT...if football is not played this year there will be a huge economic loss in terms of jobs and revenue that supports the entire university. And, like Furman, absence of football will absolutely devastate the non-revenue sports with additional loss of jobs and economic losses felt throughout the state.

Yep, the doomers will celebrate. They care not a whit.

And the band played on.

Be safe...be well.

A college degree is not what it used to be. Unless you are going for a master or doctorate in some fields, it just ain't worth it no more.

If college football is canceled or played without fans in the seats, then, a
lot of smaller programs will fold. As a rule football supports a lot of
other athletic programs on campus. Those other programs will be gone
first. Exceptions to football being the big sport on campus exist, i.e.
Kansas, Kentucky the big sport is probably basketball.

Baseball is a game that will break your heart. It’s a matter of when. What’s that line from Moneyball? “We’re all told at one point or another that we can’t play the game anymore”. True as heck. Gotta play while one can, any way one can.

That being said, my son’s tournament team is playing two double headers this weekend. He’s a lefty pitcher with a mind made for the game. So fun to watch.

A majority of small market MLB teams are doing their best to make it difficult for the minor leagues as well. There is a 5 player draft this year and a move to stop supplying players to over 40 teams and contract two leagues.
Somehow they don't see the effect this will have at the lower levels of baseball with kids eventually quitting the sport after little league with smaller chances of playing professionally. Minor leaguers got a large raise last year, with many AAA players being bumped to almost $18K a year. Compare that to the highest level of minor league hockey @ $45K a year.
It appears that MLB is effectively shooting itself in the foot.
