I purchased some Berry's copper plated full wadcutters. Put them together with some Winchester new .38 special brass and some CCI primers with a classic load of Bullseye.
It was easy to get all the rounds in the ten ring at 15 yards. After 50 of them I got a second box and put up a new target. At round 56 I dumped the empty cases and put in 6 fresh ones. The cylinder could not be closed. There was a fair amount of smoke on the cylinder but not much. Anyways I took out the unfired rounds and packed up my stuff and went home.
First thing I did was take off the grips. Next I brushed the extractor star with Hoppes and a soft toothbrush. I cleaned the bore, it was surprisingly clean. The cylinder holes also got scrubbed first with a copper brush and some Hoppes, then with Hoppes soaked cotton patches, and finally with dry patches.
Last thing I sprayed everything with Gun Scrubber and wiped it down with a static free cloth.
The cylinder now closes easily and is normal.
I've had several Model 19's over the years. Normally I can shoot 100 - 150 rounds and they still function just fine. Maybe this one is just finicky?
In the old days (mid 1980's) I wanted everything to be maximum so I used lots of WW 296 and Hercules 2400 with 110 grain or 125 grain JHP's. Needless to say the guns got very dirty.
