12 Gauge Coach Gun

My muzzle job on the void between barrels is to shove a little tuft of brass wool in void, flux and fill with low temp silver solder. Draw file square with barrels.

You are more ambitious than I am. I'm lazy :D. I will admit it looks better with the void filled but it shoots just as good not filled. Larry

TOPS,
I can't weld. I just end up setting myself on fire while making a terrible bead.

So I filled the gap in mine with JB Weld

Then I stood the barrels on a sheet of non-stick Reynolds wrap. They were muzzle down so the JB would fill all the nooks and crannies. Let it dry 24 hours

Everything was flush so all I had to do was color the JB darker. I forgot which cold blue worked

Filling void with low temp silver solder takes no skill at all. It is done in seconds with propane torch. Anyone that can light a torch can do it. Any cold blue will turn the silver solder dark. I’ve not come across any cold bluing that has any effect on JB weld.

This was 20+ years ago so my memory could be wrong

It might not have been cold blue, but it was something that was on the shelf at my friends shop

A sawed off double made a good rabbit and grouser it thick cover. It seems today they are being discovered as range toys. Some of the old hammerless guns would double when worn.

I had a 16ga Stevens 311 I cut down and filled the void, reinstalled the bead. It was a bit distinctive as the finish was poor so I stripped it and browned it as well as stripping the stock and keeping it blonde. But some lowlife stole it along with several other firearms from me in the mid '70s.

I have another Stevens in 20ga and an LC Smith in 20ga, but they are definitely not getting cut!

As for new ones isn't one being made in Turkey?

I have cut some nice guns. They weren’t mine and I tried to talk owners into looking for a chunk to chop. I won’t cut a nice gun of my own. There is one exception, I can’t abide adjustable chokes. I always cut them off and throw them in junk box. They are handy to save a gun that Bubba whacked to illegal length.

There must be lots of lazy people. I don’t know how many times I have had cheap SxSs at shows and nobody even flipped the tags. Then I got smart and started cutting them to 18.25”, jack price at least $50 and they will be sold before lunch. Works on cheap pumps and autos too.

I like this. :) No, I love this. :D Trouble for me would be, I'd probably keep them rather than sell them. Many inexpensive Stevens 311s/Fox Model Bs were cut down to 18-20" bbls when they were available at reasonable $. The company even made a 311R model with 18" bbls.

Also on this type of gun it is a waste of time to refinish wood and blue. A paint job is a plus. Camo or Black , plus another $25.

I believe that one was built by Savage-Stevens. Possibly a Model 235.

Sears and Montgomery awards sold some nice guns under their name. Some real junk too. Lol. I always look at them and try to figure out who made actually made them.

Jimmy the Stogers I’ve seen have been decent looking and I’ve never heard of a problem with them.

I have a Remington Spartan (Russian Baikal) exposed hammer SxS that I used for a couple of years for CAS. It has held up well to a fairly high shell count. This one has true external hammers, not fake ones with striker firing pins. One of the first things I did with it was to disable the auto on feature of the safety.

I recently aquired this Montgomery Wards 12 gauge

Its tight as a tick.
What the...?!!!! I own my dad’s old Wards Hercules 12 gauge Which is a hammer less version of this. A very solid gun. I’ve thought about getting it shortened. I never seen one with hammers before in years of cowboy shootin’ in the 80s and 90s. And, Muley Gil, thanks for naming the real maker which I always forget. I could use a factory butT stock for mine.

Buying cheap imported doubles the worst models have hammers with the firing pin on hammer. Very poor system and prone to breakage. Recievers are soft too. Most out of Brazil & China. Russian stuff fairly dependable.
No experience with Turk SxSs. Their pumps and autos don’t impress me either.
