I like the .223. Plentiful and relatively cheap compared to , say .270 or 30-06 well you get the picture.Great plinkin ground and will do the job as far as I am concerned on just about anything else I might encounter in Louisiana. From what I gather, "modern sporting rifles" are somewhat out of favor amongst some crowds so the dilemma is what is an acceptable platform from which to launch .233 projectiles. Have an AR, have a mini 14, but I want something a bit more....genteel.
So I just purchased a Ruger .223 RSI Hawkeye and I will be mounting a Leupold 1x4 AR scope on it. That way I can send carefully aimed projectiles down range to my heart's content instead of popping off.223 from the mini and AR-thus saving money in the long run. Kinda like shooting a SxS rather than the Benelli SBE. And the Ruger IS a lot more socially acceptable. Now I can sell my AT and Mini at obscene profits and instead of spraying down the field feeling the need to keep firing until I have emptied the magazine I can languidly shoot as I see fit topping off the magazine of the RSI.
If they made a Ruger RSI in stainless in 7.62x39 my world would be complete. Or if someone has a stainless #1 in 7.62x39 give me a call

Was interested in your post and googled not sure what you have , could you give the full proper name or model? Pics ?

Despite handling and firing a very large number of M16s, I have never owned an AR, and probably never will. I am just not taken with them. My one and only .223 rifle is a scoped Savage 112 Series J heavy barrel single shot bolt action, probably my most used rifle because it groups so well - 1 MOA or less (10 shots, not 5) with about any ammunition I have ever used in it.

Stainless Ruger Model 77 in .223 caliber with mannlicher stock Lipsey's specials one of 250. Just a handsome weapon.

this except in .223 and stainless

Assuming you can find one you should consider a Remington 7615.
It's a .223/5.56 pump rifle based on the 870/760 family of guns that accepts standard .223/5.56 magazines:

Mine has Tru-Glo fiber optic sights:

New York State tried to ban them under the SAFE Act but that provision was ruled arbitrary and capricious.

The now discontinued 7615 is a favorite in Australia where semi-auto .223/5.56 is a no-no.

My first venture into the 223 Remington was a Sako L461 sporter in '75. Never ever considered it "genteel". And about a bagillion prairie dogs and ground squirrels really didn't think it to be genteel. Still have it, but it wears a Douglas stainless barrel chambered in 221 FireBall, a bit more genteel calibre than the 223.:D

THIS! I got one of these just a couple of months back .... and have plenty of twenty round AR mags that work great in it. Highly recommend if you want another in addition to your Ruger.

Bushmaster, that Remington 7615 is an interesting rifle. I need to be on the lookout for one.

Unfortunately they were discontinued not long after their introduction. They were meant to be a less threatening alternative for police compared to an AR15.

If one comes up on Gunbroker now they sell for about $1000

Would also like to have a Rem 7615.
Looks like a little too late!
I may buy a Lefthand 223 Rifle, probably a Savage.
I know, I said, no more rifles!
But as that Minn duffer sang,
These Times They Are A-changing.
I sold all except my Carl Gustoff 30-06.

Hey Caj .... I think Ruger also made the 77 in 7.62x39 but it was a limited run Williams Exclusive .... and stainless.

My alternate .223 is a Remington Mod. 700 Tactical with an appropriate scope. It shoots tiny groups with my hand loads.

The first 7.62x39 bolt-actions Ruger made was in the early 1990s: a limited edition run for Davidsons' (wholesaler). I don't remember for sure now, but the run was either 3,000 or 5,000 rifles. These were all 77 MKIIs, stainless barrels and actions and the funky black Zytel synthetic stock. I'd have to check to make sure, but I believe the bores were about .310". Regardless, they were accurate with .308 jacketed bullets and just about everything else. I bought two of these and shot them extensively with jacketed and cast bullets.

Later, (can't remember when) Ruger came out with a regular bolt-action production rifle (not the cheap one) in 7.62x39 but it did not have the stainless features as I recall. Probably as good a rifle as the original Davidsons' guns.

There was a comprehensive writeup (with extensive cast bullet data) on the original Davidsons' guns in HANDLOADER magazine #177, October , 1995.

"NICE!!!!!!!!!Are those .308 or .311???"

Mine is .308. I have a case of Hornady ammo where they used Russian mild steel cases, and loaded them with their own polymer tipped bullet. Shoots great.
