I am guessing that the parachute in question was a reserve. Or at least I hope so.
In my younger, leaner, days, I engaged in some sport jumping for a short time. I met the gal who caught my eye, and she told me that she wasn't going to come out to the jump zone, and she wasn't going to wait at home for a telephone call. I sold up and never jumped again.

Reminds me of the Chinese Proverb - If at first you don't succeed, maybe skydiving wasn't your sport.
I friend who worked for the classified department of a newspaper once told me those kind of ads were used to sell 'want ad space'. The phone numbers led back to the ad sales department. I have no idea if his story was fact. I have seen the chute ad in 'Trade a Plane' years ago. I think it is just filler.

Back in the early 1980's a popular local TV weatherman made a jump and his shoot failed to open. I recall the joke at the time was "What was the last thing to go through his mind when he fell?.... His feet."

If I was going on a parachute jump the plane would have a crew of 17. The pilot, the copilot, a navigator and 14 guys to push me out!
Tough decision to jump out of a perfectly good aircraft. Aircraft on fire and falling out of the sky, not so much.
