A PLEA FOR CIVILITY

Its obvious that the treatment you received on another now locked thread is what prompted the creation of this thread. The pummeling you received on that thread was a bit much, even for this group! My favorite was the beating a dead horse reference...when in reality everything here has been covered Ad Naseum. To truly understand the reaction you received to your thread, look up the work Clique. Not to mention your from California, so your at a disadvantage from the get go.

Actually, I am not from California! Far From It! I was born and raised in Arkansas until my second year in college, graduated from Eastern New Mexico University after my father got transferred to the state of New Mexico, Lived 10 wonderful years in Casper, Wyoming, and another 10years in Texas. I have lived in quite a few states. I have been in California for the last six years after I broke my own oath never to set foot back in this state after being discharged from the Army upon returning from overseas here only to be spat on by a "nice" long blond haired California female in LAX while I was still in uniform! My wife's oldest son just had two fraternal twin girls and I allowed her to convince me move here so she could nanny those girls so I have no one to blame for my fate here but myself. But then facts never get in some peoples' way of prejudice. :)

I freely admit I am prejudiced against California due to its Socialist anti-gun, policies, actions and the fact that California does not guarantee the Right of Self-Defense to its citizens!

As a rule most people here understand what what someone means even if the term is not perfect. What I hate is reading a novel and the author has no real clue about firearms. For example. "He brought the AK47 up and put six rounds of 223 through the window" or " he pulled his colt peacemaker chambered a round and then shot the head off the snake" If you are going to take the time to write a novel do try to know your subject.

There are many things that are against the rules on these forums specifically because they're practically impossible to have a civil discussion about.
Unfortunately, any discussion of the effectiveness or lack thereof regarding self-defense might as well be added to that list, because folks get so darn worked up over it, not unlike various banned subjects.

I learned a long time ago that it's best not to start discussions regarding the effectiveness of various facets of self-defense both here and elsewhere. You'll get chewed up and spat out for it, regardless of how impartial you make the OP, how many times you urge folks who post to remain civil, or how desperately you try to steer the thread away from being derailed into an insipid debate between various schools of thought.
There is quite literally just as much unnecessary intolerance, anger, and bad blood between two cartridges as there are between two separate creeds. Sadly, some folks simply cannot tolerate any opinion other than their own, and they'll start an argument with just about anyone who doesn't express sentiments which perfectly mirror their own, and they'll even go so far as to hold petty grudges over such disagreements. They've been around since the dawn of mankind and will most likely persist straight up to the bitter end. Heck, some folks go even around looking to provoke arguments by repeatedly expressing extreme sentiments because they know that eventually somebody will take the bait.

It can't be helped, and it isn't your fault. I guarantee that no matter how you had worded that thread, the exact same folks would have still gotten all bent out of shape about it became that's just the way that they are and they will most likely never change.

There was a wise saying that I heard not too long ago shortly after I had been torn to shreds on another forum by simply stating that violence should always be a last resort. I don't remember exactly how it went so I'm paraphrasing here, but it went something like this...
"The difference between a wise man and a fool lies in how he reacts to being challenged/corrected. A wise man considers what he has been told, is willing to accept/admit when he was wrong, and will even thank the other person for setting them straight. A fool reacts immediately with anger/insults, will never accept/admit that he was wrong, and will hold a grudge against the other person for pointing out their flaws."
Ever since I read that, it not only convinced me not to bother with folks who react like that, and to be careful never to behave like the fool myself.

There are no sure things in life according to man. At 71 years old I just don't find it worthwhile to suffer those that have closed minds. I like to keep learning myself and I learn new things every day. My understanding is always improving and expanding with each passing day. Being a voracious reader and constantly trying to expand my knowledge in as many fields of study as I can. Let those who wish go there own way as they have to answer for and suffer for their own actions. Life is to short as it is.

Some of us believe we have found a better way. Only those that seek shall find what they seek. :)

It's easy to see how the term Long Colt came to be. I can imagine when the shorter 45 for the schofield came out that was the easy way to describe them. As to clip and magazine I stopped explaining the difference a long time ago. Call it want you want. How about "Hand" and "Pawl" if you make the gun call it what you want. I once referred to to a Winchester as a BDL and was chastised that Winchester never made a ADL. I explained it was simply a common term relating to a rifle that had a solid wood stock and no bottom metal or a blind magazine. I then had to explain that bottom metal was an acceptable term and I didn't have to say trigger guard. Ammo anyone 38 S&W vs 38 Colt NP. In any case No Worries most of these people have no experience and get their information form books they think they understood.

One of the reasons I joined this forum was due to the civility, understanding, willingness to help, and lack of bashing each other that I saw versus some of the other forums. I hope this continues. This has been a tough year for all. I pray that we will all think before we speak and will work together to keep this one of the best firearms forums on the internet.

If only more people think as you do, seeking simply to learn rather than to prove or disprove, to confirm or debunk.

It will never happen, but not celebrating job loss, financial ruin, highways collapsing, floods, famine and locusts because of the state it happens in would be a refreshing change. Its fun to dream.

I like that.

Except every time I see people going batspit over their alma mater's sports teams in a state that they no longer live in I just want to tear my hair out. Especially older folks who haven't seen the inside of their alma mater in decades or have not even been to that state in decades.

I say 45 Colt, but I don't make a big deal if someone says 45 Long Colt.

I used to own a Uberti Cattleman (SAA clone) and if I went to Dunham Sports, back when there was ammo, on more than one occasion I had to correct the person they called to meet me at the "bullet" case. EVERY time I was handed a box of .45 Auto. I realized it was a lost cause to retrain said person, so I would get specific and say ".45 Long Colt for revolvers. It may have the words cowboy loads on the box also. If it says Auto, it's not the right box." I never bought a firearm there, retail prices, but they did have very good prices on ammo; and lots of it.
I still have a full box of them, but if I give them away, I'll end up getting a deal on another .45 revolver! The price tag on it says $39.95, I believe.

So far I have refrained from complaining about their, there, and they're and will contine to do so.
THANKS. English and spelling were never my best. wore out 3 dictionary in 2 years of collage. Of course that was before PC and smart phones, we had typewriters that had arms that swung up and hit a ribbon ...........................GOOD LORD HOW DID I GET THIS OLD:eek:

What do I do to keep the bullet heads from sticking in the cylinders of my gun? 😳

Those must be the bullet heads that were hermetically sealed after being lubed in an old mayonaise jar kept on Funk & Wagnels back porch.
I avoid those on Carnacs always good advise.
Jim
