1st year of current 640 model?

makes sense as it is a heavy little booger, that's for sure. It did remind me of the current 640's but with the 38 standard j frame barrel on it. Did not know if the CCE serial number would indicate a time frame someone may knew about its production time or info on it. I am still kicking it around as i have 3, air weight J's now and was thinking of adding it to the stable. Decisions, decisions...

I have a 640-1, with a CCD**** serial #. I bought it new in October 1997 as a back up and it still pulls that duty to this day. It was $410.00 back then.

Seems like only yesterday Centerfire was selling those LEO trade-in (Mich. State Police if I remember correctly) 640's for $349. The 640-1 I received was dirty but looked barely shot.

Thanks for all your help fellows, now do I want to get it or not is the question. We shall see, gonna think about it.

The 640-1 was my choice for back pocket carry in 1995-96. I shot a few .357's with it but quickly settled on 135 grain Gold Dot .38+P. It's a short-range J frame and requires practice and discipline. Nowadays, 25 years on, the old 640-1 is still my primary pocket revolver even though I have a 642 and a 13-2 3". That said, I say go for it.

Mine has been carried for nearly 13 years.

My 640 is CEN16XX marked +P+ , wonder how many were in the 1st run

I've owned 2 or maybe 3 640-1. I'm currently carrying the 640 Pro with the really nice sights on it. These are great guns. If I'm not mistaken I had a 640-3 357 mag once. It had s/n on the side plate and butt that were peeves in nit stamped. I'll have to look up S/N in inventory but I thought it started with a CEN too.

Curious what the pin is on this 640? I see it on the older ones but the newer ones do not have it.. Is it something for the firing pin???

The rim fire models (34) have that pin, so I suspect you both are correct, that it is to retain the firing pin. Maybe the design has changed on the newer models so it is no longer necessary.
