I'm interested in tracking down either an SFPD or SAPD Model 58. Actually, those are the only two department issued/stamped 58s I'm familiar with, but maybe there's more out there. Anybody know of any additional departments that carried the 58 way back when?

I have seen one LDC (LA Dept Corrections). I own San Antonio PD and San Francisco PD examples. There were a lot of unmarked, agency owned guns.

The LDC gun is owned by a forum member....perhaps he will share a picture with us?

The San Francisco gun is the most elegantly marked version that I have seen, and the San Antonio gun looks like it was marked with single hand stamps by a first year high school shop student ;)

A very good friend of mine collects .41 Mags, and he stumbled into an SAPD 58 last week for $750. It's marked identically to the one pictured above. He has owned an SFPD 58 for years, and I want to say it's marked in the same fashion as the San Antonio gun and looks nothing like the marks on yours. I may be mistaken, because I've not seen the gun in a long time. Gonna have to check it out again.

$750 is a steal on a SAPD marked 58, all of the one's that I have seen for sale (and sold) in the last 10 years brought over a grand easily. There was a consecutive pair that was sent to the city as 'test guns' that sold for quite a bit.

Be wary of one listed as SAPD with oddball barrel caliber markings of 41 Keith, it has been proven that it did NOT ship to the city in that manner (plus the seller wants stupid money for it).

LDC (LA Dept Corrections) are we talking about the State of Louisiana ?
LA - Los Angeles Ca. or LA - Louisiana ?

Louisiana Dept. of Corrections ... ?
Gary
Louisiana Man

The M58 was the duty weapon for the Amarillo, TX PD for many years, however, they were not marked or stamped indicating the department. They were not issued by the city, you purchased it and it was yours. I recently found my receipt from the city where I purchased my equipment 1-27-75, including the M58, receipt was for $125.98. This included the Don Hume leather belt, holster, cartridge carrier (death dumper), handcuff case, 1 pair handcuffs (S&W), and 1 .41 cal revolver (M58). If I remember correctly, the M58 was $77.00 if purchased separately. Also, Amarillo Hardware Company was a distributor of S&W's, so if you have a M58 that letters to Amarillo Hardware, most likely it was from the PD.

My now deceased friend and former patrol lieutenant carried a Model 57 when he began his career in 1973. It was his personally owned revolver which he traded off years before he died.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol issued nickel Model 58's for a short period. I think it was a test. They were transitioning from the .38 Model 10 heavy barrel (nickel) guns and were trying to decide which way to go. The .357 won out (Model 19 nickel and Colt Border Patrol also nickel). The Model 58's were phased out. They were not marked in any way by the NC SHP. A friend had one and I tried to buy it from him the last time I saw him prior to his untimely death. He had sold it earlier. Later that day, at the same gun show, I found a nickel 58 in the box which possibly is unfired since leaving the factory.

Mine is marked SAPD. I think the stamp was done in house. The nicer stamps are done by S&W and I think at the time you had to order 500 revolvers to get the S&W department stamp.
