Sport 2 questions

The OR was available when you bought your rifle

I guess I just didn't know about them. I saw lots of info on the Sport model that I bought. I never heard of the OR until this thread. I thought I did my homework but I guess not.

I had my choice between the OR and the Sport 1 with 1:8 twist and 5R rifling for the same price. The OR had the chrome lined barrel, 1:9 twist, ejection port cover and forward assist. I went with the Sport, due to the barrel and because it had sights out of the box... the OR would have cost me more to set up to shoot.

I really don't have any complaints with my Sport. I would have just chosen to save some money (if possible) to get an AR without the A2 sight post. But my red dot has no trouble avoiding the use of it and it's there should I ever need it. I don't wish I had gone that way by any massive, overwhelming desire. If I did I'd simply buy one. It just suits my taste a little more. No big deal. I think there are other things that could be done without the sight post being there like mounting a laser on a lower plane than my red dot. Lasers can be very effective in the right situation. I know you can mount one on the bottom of the grip but I like a forward pistol grip so that doesn't leave room for mounting anything in front of it. I suppose I could have gone with a quad rail or the right key mod setup and mount one on the side of the rifle but IMO that detracts from the way a rifle looks. Again this is mostly just my preference. I don't see it as a major advantage or anything.

That's ironic. Everything you stated was almost the same with me when I bought my Sport I (5) years ago. But, the OR price was like $1029, or somewhere in that area. And, they had the Sport with the carry handle as well. I too chose the Sport I because of the barrel, sights, and price.
I just wish my son would return it!

Typically, the OR was more expensive than the Sport. I found a guy at a gun show who had a stack of OR rifles in cardboard boxes. He said he was an LE distributor, or something to do with LE, and these were contract overruns, so that was why he could offer them at the price point of the Sport.

No plastic case, no magazine... just the rifle in the cardboard box. But he was willing to throw in a tactical bag with it. Looking back, I should have jumped on it!

Optics ready Sport II for home defense only

I realized that this model

M&P 15 Sport II | Smith & Wesson

Comes with:
Front Sight Adj. A2 Post
Rear Sight Folding Magpul (MBUS)

Since I only plan to use my weapon for home defense and don’t plan to install optics, what would you recommend?

Wow, old thread. For home defense, most are going to recommend a red dot. Just quicker that standard iron sites. But a red dot will work fine with the A2 front post.

Thank you. I have 2 questions:

1) I have a Mossberg Persuader 12 gauge for home protection. I got the AR on the advice of a friend to defend if confronted by a mob threatening my home like the couple in St. Louis last year. Given that, do I need any sights or is my S&W be sufficient as is?

2) If not, what would you advise between:

[ame="https://www.amazon.com/Bushnell-Trophy-TRS-25-Riflescope-1x25mm/dp/B00200E0HM"]Amazon.com : Bushnell Trophy TRS-25 Red Dot Sight Riflescope, 1x20mm, Black : Rifle Scopes : Sports & Outdoors[/ame]

and

Thanks again!

Thanks again!

A red dot will offer quicker target acquisition over the standard
iron sights. I would not recommend either of the optics you have chosen though for defensive use. The Bushnell TRS-25 is a great red dot for a range gun... I have a couple myself. However the issue is that they have a short battery life. You want a quality red dot that measures battery life in years, not hours. That way, if you accidentally leave the red dot on, you won't find that the battery is dead if you ever have to use it for defensive purposes. I have grabbed my AR a couple of times and found that I had left the red dot on by accident.

I would look at the Aimpoint Pro, or if that is outside of your budget, maybe this one...

Holosun HS403B Red Dot - 2 MOA
