This is my first entry on the forum and it's a request to fix a problem. Sorry

I have a newly acquired model 1917 and so far I'm batting 0% on finding moon clips that fit. I bought the Wilson Combat clips from Brownells and several sets of a different maker from Midway. They both fit my 25-2 with no problem but won't make the last 1/4" from chambering in the 1917.

These are my full length resized reloads and the individual rounds drop in the cylinder with no problem unless they are installed in a moon clip.

I would like to find a source of either full or half moon clips.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't use them for defense duty but for range duty I find Rimz full clips suit my needs with my Brazilian. I think I use the early versions that fit my 625-2 as well. The fit solid and are super easy to load/unload.

Welcome to the forum ! Unless you can find genuine S&W ones the aftermarket ones are a **** shoot (pun intended) except the aforementioned Rimz I haven't tried those before. Oh and we love pictures...

Ok Randy, thanks both of you for the reply. I've ordered the Rimz set and if I'm lock enough to come across some S&W clips, I'll jump on those as well. I'll post a picture of my 1917 if I can figure out how later.

I actually have a bunch of them. They are S&W, but they are buried in a box somewhere and right now I can't find them. When I do, I'd be happy to send you a few, gratis.

A couple months back, I promised some to someone else here on the Forum, but as I said, I have not been able to locate them. Since that time, I've forgotten who that was. If you read this, whoever you are, send me a PM, so I can send them along when they are located.

I'm making a note of your need. :)

You can feel confident with the Rimz 25 model for more than just range work. If you have any questions they are extremely helpful. The model 25 moonclip is reinforced and specifically for self defense, which is good, as I carry them daily.

Thanks!!!
I'll be more than glad to purchase what you are willing to sell.
I'll give posting a few pictures a try.

Moon Clips?

NICE 1917!! :D
Well once again  I seem to be missing something. They say ignorance is bliss.;) I have a couple stacks of moon clips that I use in my Brazillian, and before that a 25 and a 625. I have never had a problem of any kind. #1, what makes the ones for defense different?? Loading and unloading was a pain so I sold the 25 & 625 but life without a 45 revolver is dull. Never had any AR brass, but have a ton of 45 brass. I finally got smart and got a loading & unloading tool from TK custom and have never looked back. :D My clips have seen a lot of use and in their day the 10MM ones as well. These are nothing special and were picked up at guns shows down through the years. I have a double pouch but he loaded clips go to the range in plastic compartment box, and get rotated as used. Right handy I must say. I mounted the loading tool on a raised tray that came with some sharpening stones and I had a spare one. maybe someone can explain what the difference is with the ones suitable for defense?? THANKS :)

Ranch Products in Malinta, Ohio is the source for moon clips. They were the original manufacturer of the modern full moon clip and also produce 1/2 and 1/3 clips. I have used them in revolvers that span a century of manufacture with no problems.

J. R.,

I do not have any of the RIMZ clips but this is what I gleaned from the internet.

When the RIMZ clips were first introduced to the public, they held the cartridges but not securely. If you dropped the loaded clip, cartridges would pop out. The company has since improved the design where this is no longer an issue. Both versions are still being produced.

Surprised nobody else posted this, the historically and practically correct answer. On top of all that, I believe that they are the least expensive even though they are probably the best, and their service is excellent.

Third-moon clips have been mentioned, and they are the most convenient for me. They are easy to load / unload without tools and 50 rounds will nicely fit in an ordinary factory cartridge box. Of course they aren't as fast a reload as full-moon clips but they are still pretty fast.

When I got mine, ordered from S&W. They sent TK clips… and if I remember, they were considerably cheaper than TK.

This would have been during the first half of 2019.

Kevin, I see. :) Had the same problem a number of years ago with speed loaders. some, if dropped, you were done. THANKS. I will have to do some tests, just in case.;) Also to add to my above, TK also makes some fine clips. As said, RANCH also is in the game but I sort of passed them by some years ago when I couldnt find any in stainless steel. Might not be the case now, I dont know. :)

I have been using moon or half moon clips for 1917 revolvers for 62 years now (bought my first 1917 revolver in 1959). Lately I have only been using the RIMS plastic moon clips, as they are easier for my arthritic hands to load or unload.
As far as the metal clips, I would occasionally have a problem with them if they became bent, and would not lie flat on a perfectly flat surface. If that happened, on rare occasions the revolver with a light main-spring could fail to hit the primer hard enough to set off the round. Apparently, the additional "give" of the clip would cushion the hammer fall. Never had that problem with the plastic clips.
