SAFETY STRAP OR NOT?

My CCW holsters do not have a retention strap. Holsters not for CCW use do have some sort of retention device, either a lock or a strap, the exception being a Bianchi Askins Avenger holster, which had a removable strap, mine was bought second-hand and the strap was missing.

I remember back in my USPSA competition days, using a TZ-75 Series 88 pistol in a pancake holster with a thumb break strap. It only happened once, but the buzzer sounded, I grabbed the butt of the pistol, my thumb missed the strap release and I gave myself an impressive denim wedgie. Those who observed my misstep were greatly amused. I can see that in a self-defense situation, it would be easy to make the same mistake, but the outcome would not be at all humorous.

I didn't mind his inquiry one bit. I was actually thinking he was maybe concerned with my safety and that was important to me. Besides I was in his/their shop and I had learned long before to mind my manners and pay attention to those with more experience than I carried. As stated, the mod 28 was my first serious revolver and I was open to his suggestion.

As i see it, anyone unwilling to at least listen to the experience of someone with more than they, needs an attitude adjustment.

I only used that Sam B. for one hunt and didn't need to use it again because I'd bought some regular Hunter(tm) holsters for my firearms. They aren't pretty but they are functional and that's really all I ask of them. They do carry the safety straps because they have been oiled extensively to preserve the leather.

Every pistol or revolver I own has a leather holster. Every holster has a thumb break retention. I ccw for 30 years in my hardware store and for this reason, doing loading, lifting and unloading, I knew that my weapon would be right where it was suppose to be. I never felt that it would slow me down in a draw either, because ALL my holsters are the same. It is nothing to flick your thunb to the left while pulling out your weapon.

Here’s an odd one. The Hank Sloan holster had an adjustable welt and was designed as a concealed carry holster. This one was ordered and supplied with a safety strap, kind of like wearing a belt and suspenders.

I do prefer a strap.
But - if the holster really - really fits the gun - like a lot of kydex do -probably not needed.
Some leather ones also have snug fit.
This 640 will come out but only if you shake it pretty hard.
