5.56 Galore

Stopped by the Hamburg, Pa. Cabelas today to kill some time,and walked by the gun area. Nothing in primers of course,but the shelves were stocked to overflowing with Winchester 5.56. Must have been a few hundred boxes,prices at, I think, $13 / 20 rounds. No, I didnt buy any. I sold about 6000 rounds of it last Fall when I rid myself of anything AR related. Hopefully the primers will be making a comeback. Best wishes to all

Today I was browsing knives at Smokey mountain knife works web site. Never knew they sold ammo. They had a variety 9, 40 and 45 apparently in stock and a available on line. FYI

I'm two years older than you, and I wouldn't even think of selling my AR. And the political tide turning against them just makes me more determined than ever to keep mine.

At 74 I'm with you all the way...My NIB Colt AR6721 is right where it's been all these years...Someday I intend to wash the cosmoline out of it and take it for a ride......Ben

Give it another month. Retailers are still trying to squeeze "relief buyers" for every extra dime. Yes, 9mm ball is plentiful @ $25/50 but that's still $500/case for ammo that was $169/1K "before." Pipeline is beyond full but urgency for cash flow has not hit, yet. Joe

I did trade a Ruger 556 pistol with a brace towards a Colt M4 Carbine. I got what I paid for it in trade value.

I don't want to deal with registering a NFA weapon if the antis get their way.

And the M4 is a very nice gun.

$14/box 20=$700 case of 50 boxes. Last case of 55gr Federal I bought (2019) was $299 with a $50 rebate. I don't think we'll see that again (I'm just finishing up a case that was $150/1K bought in 2007). $10 box is $500/case, good. 8$/box is $400, better. Joe

Ha yeah! My tastes run more in classic blued and walnut guns, but that doesn't stop me from stocking up on ARs! ESPECIALLY with the nutty political environment.

In my part of Penn's Woods 5.56 was scarce.

.308, 30-06, and 7.63x39 was mostly available, but at stupid prices.

The caliber that was completely cleaned out?

.30-30 Winchester.

The Marlin 336 is probably the most popular hunting rifle in PA.

So when this circus started, every hunter, who may not be a "gun guy ", picked up 4 or 5 boxes of 30-30.

I still have yet to see any on the shelves.

PS - .40 S&W FMJ is available for .50/rd.

I'm 5yrs older than you. I carried a M16 in RVn and never had use for military semi auto rifles of any kind. Now I'm looking for a AR because on politics. I'll pick one up from some panic seller that thinks govt is going to outlaw them or charge registration fees. You got to be stupid to pay premium money for one in today's political climate.

Same in TEXAS , Academy had 40 boxes of 5.56 GREEN TIP 62Gr for $13.00 for 20 on 24 JUNE

A fair, and honest reason. I don't have to agree with it, but I respect it. Thank you. I'm just 3 years younger than you and feel that's all the more reason to have (at least) one, with as much 'food' for it that I can muster!

For price, my "bellwether" is the .380ACP, which I was firing a lot of from my S&W 380EZ before the panic hit. At it's peak, range-quality FMJ was $2.25-$2.40/round - and you couldn't find it.

Today, I can easily find S&B factory .380ACP FMJ at $1.00/round. Yes, it is still unexplainably higher than both 9mm and .45ACP, but I have a bunch of both of those - and even at it's worst I could still find 9mm and .45 to buy.

So what I am seeing is a tremendous increase in availability and a 50% decrease in price. Will it ever get back to pre-pandemic prices? Your guess is a good as mine, but at least the trend is in the right direction!
