I hate going to the DMV office because of long lines, finding out after a lone wait that you don't have a some strange document you never knew you needed. Every time you renew you drivers license you have to prove all over again who you are and have several proofs of where you live. Well today I needed a handicap placard so I saw Dr got form and downed loaded other forms and filled them out. When I got there there was no line so walked up to clerk and handed him forms. He typed on computer, asked my phone number, had me sign a form handed me my placard and said no charge. I about fell over. In and out in five minutes with no money out of my pocket. If only all business done with license office was so smooth. Made my day.

When my wife needed to get her Handicapped placards , we drove to a little town about 40 minutes away where she was able to go in and get waited on almost immediately . We ate lunch and bought some vegetables from a roadside vendor . Nice little ride in the country , and best of all no waiting , no stress . Yep . Handicapped placards are free . Only form needed was from her Doctor .

Not free in florida. Got a temp one good for 30 days(walking cast was supposed to be off by then), $15 used it 3 times. handicap spots were always full so i just sucked it up and walked slow. had to ask the Dr a second one when the bone hadn't finished healing and decided to save the $15

I had to register a new to me truck this past week. The Idaho DMV offices in my county are a great way to waste a lot of time.
A neighbor suggested going to a county office that was about a 30 minute drive from my house.
Walked in and the place was empty. Gave them my paperwork and then the money and was out the door in less than 20m minutes.
Well worth the drive. I hated going to the DMV, but now a good cup of coffee in the travel mug, a pleasant drive over the hill and I am a happy man. I will do all of my DMV business in that little town from now on.

In Arizona, in addition to the MVD offices, there are MVD contracted independent service providers where you can do most of what you can get done at the MVD. There's an extra fee, but lines are usually MUCH shorter.

Because of the COVID down here one has to make an appointment to go to the DMV. Like any bureaucracy if id doesn't fit neatly into one of their forms it is like sticking a broomstick in a bicycle wheel. I learned a long time ago that if it isn't done on their form , it can be notarized by the Pope and they ain't gonna take it. I have taylored all my forms a long time ago to pass muster with DMV-law be damned
What is even worse is New Orleans Sewage & Water Board. My daughter is moving to New Orleans to finish her Masters Degree and is moving into a nice little apartment. I told her beforehand what to expect and whatever she does, do NOT loose her temper. She was panicked because she long ago lost track of her Social security card as they required it. I told her to ask about alternative forms of ID. She called them back and after a few minutes she hung up shaking her head. She told me that they needed two picture ID's (she had those) and since she knew her social security number by heart, she didn't need to bring in a card (apparently not many people in New Orleans know their Social Security Numbers by heart ).
The old joke among New Orleanians as well as us ex pats is "What is yellow and sleeps six. The Sewage and Water Board trucks" ANy of y'all who have spent time in New Orleans knows qhat I'm talking about :D

We have a nice set up here where you can renew online within 30 days of your birthday. Unfortunately I didn’t check my license until a year after it expired. We’ve had huge budget cuts eliminating most dmv offices so I’d need to schedule a driving test separately from the walk in written test. While I pondered that I had a stroke and then COVID showed up and all of the offices were closed fora long time.I’ve been driving on an expired license for almost three years!
And I don’t care [emoji38]

North Carolina requires you update your address and get a new license withing 90 days of moving so after we moved up here to Mayberry my wife and I went to the DMV office (nearby so surely we'll be in and out quick as there were few cars in the parking lot). Went in and were told we had to make an appointment by the one guy working there. Two weeks later we arrived and were in and out in 20 minutes. First time in my experience the DMV required an appointment!

When I left NC, I sold my truck and had to turn in the old license plates. The DMV must have the old tags before you can drop the vehicle from your insurance policy because without the DMV having the old tags, you get a $50 fine for having an uninsured vehicle.

I wanted to get a receipt for old tags and decided to "bite the bullet" and go the the DMV and got into the 25-30 person line. There were five DMV gals sitting behind the desk positions. Three of the gals were watching their computer screens but had "Position Closed" signs in front of them. The other two were serving the customers in line. As the line snaked closer, I could see through a partically open door, two more gals in the back room, talking. A total of seven DMV gals but only two working. Shortly before I reached the head of the line, one of the gals removed the "Position Closed" sign and started waithing on customers. It was nearly a two hour event but I did get the receipt for the turned in tags. During the two hours, the gals never came out of the back room and two of the "Position Closed" never opened up. Go figure.

Last year (2020) Was a Jackpot year! My yearly truck tags and my driver's license both came due in January! I did the mail in truck tag renewal for about $5.50 over tag cost (includes postage and no line!) and the entire state was given until June first to renew you DL. I drive by 2 different offices a few times a week and could see the line outside and for social distancing in the rain, you could wait in your car and they called when it was your turn. I waited until April 15 and when driving by I saw no line got in and out in 20 minutes with a new DL. They ask If I wanted one good for Airplane travel? I said, "No Thank You, I can't drive a plane!"

That's interesting. Which state operated DL offices have been eliminated?

The two we utilize have been in the same places for years (one for over three decades) and the number of offices listed as being open per the state is very extensive.

Arjay—I have always suspected you were a hardened criminal!

As our luck would have it my son turned 16 last year in the middle of the Covid blow-up. All of our DMV offices are closed but the major offices in a few regions of the state. To further complicate things, they have limited the the hours and days of the week they give the actual driving test. And with virtually all the offices closed ALL DMV business has been funneled to the 4 or 5 offices in the state that are open.

I knew we were in trouble when we show up for the written test an hour before the office opens and the line in 75 people long! By opening time the line easily extends for a mile, and I wish I was exaggerating.

We wait in line almost two and a half hours. I have to accompany him too, because a parent has to sign all the initial paperwork. Guess what, he then fails the first test! My comments to him on the way home would make the most hardened Paris Island drill instructor blush.

We wait the required time to retest and show up two hours early. 10 people already in line then. We wait two hours for the office to open, he gets in and wisely makes 100% on written test.

He schedules his actual driving test and we show up and a pretty little State Trooper (never thought I would use “pretty” and “State Trooper” in the same sentence) gave him his driving test which he passed with flying colors.

I am never going to a DMV office again as long as I live. I will live my life on the run like Arjay before I ever deal with this again.

Ours is a quick easy experience which is to be expected in a county of less than 5K people.

30 some years ago I’d let my license expire so I needed to take the written test again.I failed it!
I asked the girl if I could take it again. “No! Come back tomorrow” So I asked her if I could have my failed test to study. No! Take this booklet and study!” So with my tail between my legs I left and drove home . She was mean 😆

I tried to get my boat tralier tag. only $16.......

but since I was late they said there would be a $96 late fee.

Called the office and a nice guy told me with a special form that showed that I did not drive it the fee would still be only $16.

Now it is Aug. 8th and I have yet to get the tag.......
there is no water in the lakes and I can't launch in Calif or Nevada
since I am handicaped and need a dock !!

I will probable get it by December....... just because ??

Our local DMV office has a drive thru window. When i ruptured my left achilleas tendon the doctor gave me the paperwork, I drove up to the window and was gone in less than 5 minutes. Couldn't believe it. Real, live, great service from the government of Virginia.

My last visit was last January to get a new drivers license. Thanks to c***d, they made us wait in line outside.

January. Minnesota.

But on the plus side, they messed up when they transferred it from Indiana. I checked my driving record on Indiana's web site, they transferred my (non existent) CDL, while my (real) license is still valid.

They punched holes that spell out VOID in my Indiana license and gave it back to me. Valid through 2024. I should try using it if I am ever stopped.

My license was due this month and I was ready to head to the DMV office when I got a letter from the Sec. of state office telling me that because I have not had any accidents or tickets (safe driver) I could renew on line and a new license would be issued to me in the mail. 4 weeks later it was in my hand. About the only thing about this state (Illinois) I like

I've dealt personally only with 2 state DMV's, Nevada and Ohio. I don't know if Nevada (Las Vegas) is 10% as bad as it used to be, but even if it is, Ohio, at least in Lucas and Wood counties, would still blow it away. If you spend even a half hour in the place here, you're a very unlucky person. Last month, I got my license renewed and had to take the vision test, etc, and I was out in 15 minutes. I did the verification of identity, too, so I can fly if I ever wanted to again. From what friends in Cal, Mich, IN, Ill, and Ky tell me, nothing beats the local DMV/BMV here. It's been about the same since I got my license in 1972.
