Trying to find some information about this, as it seems to be one of the only ones I’ve ever seen. I have searched long an wide for anyone referencing a full lug 14-4, and as far as I can tell, no one ever has, at least not in this forum.

14-4, 6”, pinned but not recessed, target trigger, target sights, target stocks. Serial starting in 90K. Without a doubt a matching factory finish and assembly. By all accounts manufactured in 1980.

Well there never were any full lugged and pinned 14-4s. I think I saw this one or one like it for sale by one of the supposed trustworthy sellers on
GB. But they probably just go by what the owner tells them. The gun Im sure works great and if the barrel was put on correctly Im sure it shoots fine. As a shooting gun it wont differ from any 14-5- 6-7. Ive put that barrel on a couple of 19s with some other work done they shoot great. But its not a true under lugged model. Look where the bottom of the barrel meets the frame. The under lugged guns, and any 19, 66 frame is cut different so it is flat to mate with the bottom portion of the lug. On this gun you can see the lug goes below and away from the frame at the bottom. The frame was for a non lugged model like a 14-4. Like I said I have done that to many guns for guys and they shoot great providing the barrel wasnt over tightened and put on properly. Its not much of a difference, most might not notice, unless you have worked with these barrel swaps. I dont have a picture showing the cylinder open but you can see the frame difference in these photos.
I believe the first under lug 14s were in 91. These guns were designed specifically for police distinguished matches unless it was some type of special order, and I have never seen one, they came with a target hammer and a smooth combat trigger. There was some articles here about the development of this model. Maybe SW made a run of barrels and stuck one on a 14-4 to see how it worked, before modifying the frame, who knows. But you would probably have to have something to back up any claim like that, and they had moved on to model 15s only by 85-86.
I gave up contacting sellers on GB about this type of stuff, they always come back with some smart answer like "we are not experts so we have to go by what the owner told us". So generally its buyer beware.

There are probably more Full Lug Model 14-4's floating around than you might think. Why? Smith & Wesson ran out of the non-lugged barrels for the Model 14-4's and earlier many years ago. If a Model 14-4 was sent in to the factory with a damaged barrel after they ran out, S&W would install a full lug barrel from the Model 14-5.

My 14-6 is a full lug; set up as my PPC gun

S/W might have installed an under lug type barrel on you 14-4 if you requested it otherwise I would think they would have put a 6" barrel from the model 15-5-6-7 that was wide ribbed and identical to the 14-4 barrel. They made that model well into the 90s. A lot of PPC shooters used the 14-5-6s for the frame of a PPC heavy barrel gun. That left a lot of take off barrels laying around for sale. At one time I had 4 of them around. I think that might be where alot of this type of guns come from.

Thank you for sharing that interesting 14-four. Of course, sometimes barrels grow shorter, get exchanged…. Nonetheless, I imagine your 14-4 so configured is very accurate and a joy to shoot.

If you ever acquire any further information, please feel free to share! Meantime, it looks like it has lots of life left in it. As you noted, the finish looks extremely fine and uniform.

Never heard of a -4 with full underlug barrel, as some have said maybe a replacement barrel for a gun sent in ????
As for the full underlug guns, they started with the -5 engineering change and as noted above they were all square butt frames. During the -6 variation the change to round butt happened.
The picture below shows all the full underlug production versions, from the -5 thru the -7.
The top row of 6" guns show 4 -6's, two with square butt gripframes, and two with round butts.
This pic also shows three of the 4" -6's, which are very scarce.
