Found the below pics on a hunting forum that I frequent. I don't have any info on where these were found or by whom.

Not a good ending for the 'yote......hard to say if the deer survived or not.

Looking at the antler, it was shed or detached at the base.
One plus for the coyote, I don't think it suffered long.

Coyotes don't usually hunt alone. With a coyote empaled on his antler, the deer was easy pickings for the other coyotes. Unless the antler broke off, 'hope it did.

I saw a stand-off once on my property between a lone coyote and a good sized white tail doe. They were about 15 yds apart facing each other. The doe stamped her front feet a couple of times and the coyote turned and ran off.

Pretty interesting story in that photo. If the deer met his end because of the attack you would think some of his remains would be nearby.

A single coyote isn't going to have much luck with a healthy full grown deer. But, coyotes often team up. The State fish and game had a video of some running a full grown mule deer buck out on to the ice where it it had trouble running or standing. Didn't take em long once they got him on the ice. They are smart. BIL says he was out riding once and watched 3 coyotes work a prairie dog town. 2 of them would stay a bit off while one worked up close. When the dogs came up the 2 off a ways would keep their attention and the other would nail one.

If you look close the antler is not a shed. There is part of the skull still attached. Sheds have no skull plate when dropped. Living in the country all my life, I have seen some interesting coyote encounters. I saw a doe antelope litterally kick the stuffing out of a coyote. Chasing him over 5 miles, she repeatedly kicked him, rolling him across the prairie. When I left he was still running for his life. Saw a cow elk with a busted front leg, getting hounded by 3 yotes. She still had enough fight to keep them at bay. Last year I saw a doe mule deer fending off 3 coyotes. It was obvious she was protecting something in the tall grass. When I approached the coyotes left but she stayed put. I walked up to her position only to find a fawn that was way dead. Probably road kill but it had been dead for a month. Nothing but hide and bones yet she stood guard.

In the first picture, the antler looks like it has a "shed" base with no trace of a skull part. Are you sure the second picture doesn't show a part of the coyote spine next to the antler?

After starting this thread and posting the pics, I enlarged the pics (this morning) to look closer and there may be another explanation.

I thinks it's possible this was "staged".......... after looking at the pics closely I think someone could have easily put a shed antler through the coyote skull just to make an interesting pic.

No way to ever know I guess.

Friends of mine who live in Maine, and are out in the woods late winter, when the deer often yard up, and are weak, is when the coyotes really do a number on them.

Here in PA, I have seen coyotes harass deer, but against a single dog, they seem to be able to hold their own. Spring fawns get taken pretty often, though.

Weird stuff happens so never say never I guess, but that looks very staged.

You are correct. I was looking at the second photo. The first clearly shows a shed type base. And I was planning on going the entire week without being wrong. No you go ahead and spoil my stellar record.
