RIP Sidney Poitier

He passed at age 94. My mom adored his acting skills and his ability to portray gentleness and sternness in the same dialogue. I admired his gift of salesmanship as he made me believe every character he played was real. Neither of us think he ever made an unwatchable movie or television appearance.

There can only be one Mr. Virgil Tibbs.

Godspeed, good, kind sir and thank you.

Signed; a Fan.

One of the best actors I have ever seen on the big screen. I recently re-watched 'Lillies of the Field". It is just a simple lower budget B&W wonderful classic....an oasis of entertaining "feel good" the likes of which are very rare these days. Almost any movie he was in is worth the viewing just to see his work. "In the Heat of the Night" was HUGELY groundbreaking back in the day. Another wonderfully entertaining classic !! ... If you have never seen "Lillies" ...I would give it a look :)

I actually saw him in the flesh twice. First in Canada, Calgary, in the mid nineties. My step mother went straight to him to shake his hand and express her admiration. He was very kind and gracious.

A couple years later I was in the lobby of the Okura hotel in Tokyo where I was a regular for business trips as the crew rolled out the red carpet. I asked one of the bellboy who was coming : (with a strong Japanese accent) " Si do ni Poitier".

I never really thought of him as a comedic actor, but thought he was great in Shoot to Kill, which wasn't really a comedy, but he had a couple of funny scenes that I thought showed a different side to his talent.

The 1st movie I recall seeing Sidney in was "The Blackboard Jungle."

His role and the movie itself caught my attention and stuck with me.

I know there's much more famous roles, but something about this movie captured my interest.

We usually only know what their publicist and reporters want us to know about actors, I feel like we knew the real Sidney Poitier.

A genuine straight shooter that outclassed the majority of his contemporaries, and pretty much all of hollyweird today.
