Onion sandwich

big fan of peanut butter & bologna sandwiches.. family lore said grandfather liked onion mustard on rye.. growing up neighbor kids ate marshmallow fluff sandwiches.. in the movie Harvey.. they mentioned egg & onion. love the movie.. only liked the sandwich. eat whatcha like. .

Man, a big slice of Vidalia on a bun with mayo and salt is hard to beat. The first time my mother said she was eating an onion sandwich I thought she was nuts. Years later I tried one and learned just how right she was.

There was a bar on the square of Monroe, Wisconsin about 40 years ago that served a limburger cheese sandwich on thick-cut warm dark rye bread. You could get a generous slice of red onion on it if desired.

Back then Augsburger Beer was brewed in Monroe and available on-tap at this bar (sorry can't remember the name of the bar - too many Augsburger drafts apparently).

I have very fond memories of sitting in that bar with friends watching college football games on a Saturday afternoon eating locally made limburger cheese on hearty rye bread with red onion and washing them down with "Augie."

A friends family loved sweet onion sandwiches with Ketchup. They aren't bad but I generally add meat and use bbq sauce.

A friend once said he knew it was time to go grocery shopping, because last night he ate a potato chip sandwich. Ah the single life...

I like my onion sandwich with cheese.

Wife loves cucumber sandwiches.

Peanut butter and dill pickles is one of my favorites. Peanut butter and lettuce is good as the lettuce scours the peanut butter off of the roof of the mouth.

I worked as a builders labourer (Construction) when going through University (in the holidays). There was an English Electrician who use to eat toasted/grilled cheese and onion sandwiches for morning tea.

As for a recognised Australian dish, straight out onion sandwiches is not what I would class as a typical Aussie cuisine.

Served at our house:

Cucumber sandwiches made with butter or cream cheese.

Dark rye, block limburger, onion and Coleman's mustard.

Marble rye, braunschweiger, onion and brown mustard.

Fried baloney onion and mayo.

When my mom and her sister were young, their grandfather would take them on nature walks through the English countryside. His knapsack carried their lunch... Brown bread, a big chunk of Stilton and a raw onion. They drank spring water.

The boys and I like peanut butter and bacon sandwiches.

Peanut butter and cucumber are great as is peanut butter on a Bays sourdough muffin with chili,,, awesome !

I like a good white onion to eat like an apple, too!

A hold over from my early 20's, Leftover liver and onions on whole wheat bread with a good smear of creamy peanut butter! It will put hair on your chest! (and nobody at work will steal your lunch!

So, there I was at work. Hungry, but without any food. So, I made a plan. I waited until the coast was clear and then I made my move. Quick! To the fridge. Open it up. No time to look just gotta grab a bag. I snagged one and walked outside. Quickly, but like I had a purpose, not that I was fleeing the scene of lunchtime larceny. Round the corner to the spot the cameras can't see. I reached into the bag and there was a sandwich. Thank God it wasn't a salad! Starving, I unwrapped it and took a huge bite. Just before the smell hit me. Now I know why lunch bags and barf bags are basically the same!:D
