Odd Carry position

It's a carry position favored by crack dealers.
From my limited experience, criminals don't usually wear Holsters. Should an armed crook suddenly decides to run from Police (rather than confront), they are likely to dump the said firearm whilst running. It's a bit hard for them to try and dump a holster (eg OWB belt holster) also.
I worked around a few undercover narcotic Detectives who carried their pistols in the small of the back position during the 80’s and early 90’s. As a young cop I thought it was stupid…and as an old retired cop I haven’t changed my opinion.

I was at an outdoor event and open carry is legal here but a guy was carrying a 1911 in a owb holster in the small of his back. To me it looked like a way to lose a pistol. As old and stiff as I am I couldn't reach it there anyway.

Seems like how it might smell would be the least of your worries.Just don't stick that thing in my face!

I briefly carried in an IWB holster at 5 o'clock while recovering from smashing my right hand in an overhead door. Allowed me to draw with my support hand. That's as close as I'd come. It's also why I'm an advocate of practicing unsupported strong and weak hand shooting.

Never liked small of the back carry. Ruling out a gun fight, what if you just slip and fall on your back? Not good.

When I was station at Naval Station Long Beach. I was authorized to carry a concealed weapon. I carried a M1911A1 in a padded holster in the small of my back. Not many places to hide a pistol when in Cammies.

Well if Dwayne Pride (Scott Bakula) on CSI New Orleans carries his issued weapon in that location, it has to be great - right?

Hollywood uses this mode often (Lethal Weapon, Magnum PI for instance) since they can shoot scenes easier where they aren't using the gun....then have it miraculously appear from behind.

Double retention holsterless carry! What could go wrong?
I’ve never tried the small of back approach for all the reasons listed here. I did, however, try the techniclip approach with a 360PD scandium revolver for awhile. It was a nightstand gun, and being so light, I could clip it on with pajama bottoms or gym shorts while walking around the house.
I have a MDL38 nickel,with a DiSantis Clip Grip, and slip it into an Uncle Mikes pocket holster to cover the trigger. It slips over my belt, cross-draw on the the left, appendix style, and no metal exposed or poking me. If I pull it, I can't reholster without getting the Uncle Mikes out of my pants. It's strictly for 7-11 walk in the neighborhood, or the Wally World parking lot out in the boonies where I shop a lot.
I do have one of those Dwayne Pride holsters for my 1911, and it keeps the butt close to my back, upside down and all, but it's nearly three pounds if loaded. Not for walking around. Just for the Bar-B-Q days, or showing off at the outdoor range while I shoot other guns.
