I was surfing the you tube a bit on the history of the first gun I ever owned...and low and behold...look who else says it was his first gun. Sure bought back memories of a 12 year old with his first rifle. Still have mine 54 years later and shoot it often. I actually had one of the 100,000 blocks that were used in it's promotion. But it probably got thrown out with one of my old GI Joe dolls.

And the guns started shipping in my birth year...:)

Great gun for an old guy to carry around. I lucked into a first year Seneca green one that hadn't been used much at all.

Check prices on 66s, their prices have skyrocketed. I have a Seneca Green one that is like new. It's not for sale.

The nylon in the originals was made in the DuPont plant my father worked at. DuPont was selling the Nylon66 at a heavy discount promotional price to employees. I begged for one. No go. My dad had a Mossberg 22 bolt-action for his squirrel and rabbit hunting. Didn't want "that new plasic thing".

Not a good pic but I traded into two
Nylons the first part of deer season along
with the Colt.
I was surprised at the prices...

My uncle Gregory had one in Seneca Green and he'd let me use it when we went rabbit hunting. I loved that gun.

I could never convince my dad to buy me one, or a Ruger 10/22 for that matter (and they were decent semi high end guns back then). I ended up with a Savage 87C that wasn't particularly reliable, even before I wore it out.

But I inherited one from my father in law so there's that.

I still have mine too! A Nylon 66 Apache Black...first firearm I ever owned. I think I must have killed a pickup truck load of squirrels with that rifle. Still take it out shooting.

When Stingers first appeared a buddy said not to use them in a Nylon 66 as they were too hot. I wrote to Remington and got a nice letter in response saying that Stingers will not harm the Nylon 66. Still have the letter and instruction manual too!

Recently purchased one last December. I had to replace the front sight blade. I took it to the range last week, function and grouping were excellent. Looking forward to more range visits.

I have one of the late 66s in Mohawk brown that I bought NIB at a gun show shortly after they were discontinued. It has the matte finished barrel and is more accurate than it should be for such a light rifle. Bought some time back in the 80s for $100 OTD at the gun show. Probably the best $100 I ever spent.

Funny how they became so popular lately. Prices reflect the desire to own one. Seems like a gun ahead of their time back then. Looked at em back in late 60s but Ruger 10/22 won me over.

I have one I've had for near 50 years. It is on its second stock because the "indestructible" first one broke in half! It was Mohawk brown but I found an Apache black one to repair it with. I shoot it from time to time but have a lot of 22s to choose from.

After 20 years of use and abuse, my first-year Nylon 66 was showing its age, and a crack developed in the "unbreakable" stock. I remembered that the stock was "guaranteed for life", so I sent it in to Remington. Much to my shock and surprise, it was returned in a couple of weeks completely restored to like-new, inside and out.

Honest, not trying to stir up trouble! But I was struck by the love for this plastic gun vs the disdain shown by many for modern plastic guns. Nostalgia? Someday will these pages be graced by sepia-tinged reminiscences of their dad's Glock 17? :)

Also, I really admire people (like my brother) who seem to be able to hang on to early possessions for a lifetime. Wish I had my old bb gun, or dad's shotgun. Come to think of it, one of my cousins might have it... hmmm.

There is a pawn shop in North Augusta that has the entire "Nylon" collection on the wall. Bolt-lever-auto. In 1967 I didn't really like all that plastic and shark fin front sight so I went a different route at the age 13. With my earnings (from the watermelon field) I bought a Browning SA-22. Still have it......In hindsight wish I'd bought one of those nylons too.
What would be nice to have now is one of those black and chrome ones.
