1954...a very good year!

1954 was an interesting year. The Korean War had recently ended, and the Baby Boom was at its peak. Lots of innovative new products were being marketed to the public. For example, Ford Motor Co. introduced its Thunderbird (to compete with the '53 Corvette), and Fender Guitars released their Stratocaster. And perhaps most relevant to this Forum, S&W introduced its Highway Patrolman.

Elvis made and released his first recording in 1954, and quite a few famous and familiar folks were born- Jerry Seinfeld, Ron Howard, John Travolta, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jackie Chan, Jim Belushi, and Denzel Washington (I like to forget about Oprah!). Of course, most importantly to me, I was introduced to the world in Sept. 1954.

OK, I'll get to the point of this Post. I have a modest collection of S&W revolvers, many of them N-frames and magnums. What I didn't have was a birth year gun. I had a 1950 M&P .38 Spl, a 1952 Colt Detective Special, and a 1955 .357 Magnum. But no revolver from 1954. Until last week, that is. A kind and considerate Forum member saw that I was looking for a birth year gun, and contacted me about a couple of Highway Patrolman that he would consider selling to me. We worked out an equitable deal for one of them, and I now have a beautiful first year, 5-screw HP. From the research I've done on the Forum, my new HP (s/n S114481) should have shipped in July/August 1954...only a month or so before my birthday! Thank you Dave! It is an all matching revolver, including stocks and box, appears to have had only a few rounds down the pipe, finish is VG, and the case hardened hammer and trigger are bright. I'm very happy with it, and it's now a part of my HP stable. Here are a few pics.

Very very nice! Congratulations on the birth year gun, and that is definitely a great set of 28's!

Forget the rest of those guys, '54 put you and me both on the map. I'm an August baby, but what's 30 days or less between friends? I sure would like a birth year revolver like that. A Pre M28 would be fine with me, or a Pre M27. I'd take it out every year on my birthday and fire it once for every year I've been here. I have both models in 1970's vintages, but a 5-screw? You betcha. Heck, I don't play guitar, but a birth year Stratocaster would be worth a few bucks, dontchathink?

Very nice HP, Hawg Rider. I would be quite pleased to own that one as well!
1954 was a good year for many things that carried forward to the present, both people and things.
Here is a Chiefs Special that I am told shipped in 1954. It is a satin blue CS Model of 1953, four screw. This one came to me from a fellow Forum member as well in Texas (thanks again, Matt Z). Some have suggested that it is the last known third style flat latch.

'53 model here, but I won't use the increased experience to argue with you. :)

That 'ol Stratocaster is a design from on high... Leo was the JMB of his industry. But I guess if I was to go all birth year I'd be driving a nailhead Buick with a Tele in the trunk and a Centennial in my pocket.

Another '54 model here, but February for me. Sadly I do not have a birth year S&W. I do have a Winchester Model 74 22 from that year. Also a 50th Anniversary H-D Panhead, another milestone for that year. :) My 5 screw K frame M&P 38 snub is a '55 from what I have found out.

I was a "late arrival" in 1958, but seem to have an attraction to guns made in '54. My pre 27, my Winchester 71 Deluxe, and a couple more all date to '54. A wonder I didn't marry a '54 model, but she's just a kid, born in 1960. Ha.

Ya gotta be curious!!!

Beautiful gun, great to see these quality Smiths change hands among members on the Forum.

So you know it is birth year and you surmise the month range but what if it is the actual day???

Sure sounds to me like it is Letter time and hopefully Roy or Don will pin it right down to Month, Day, Year (just like Doc Brown and Marty McFly) for you:D

Birth year guns are indeed special. I'm fortunate to have two, a K38 and a Combat Masterpiece. I just missed a month and year (10/52) here a short while ago but a lot of the fun is in the quest.
I know you will enjoy your new M28 congratulations.

Beautiful HPs, Hawg Rider!
I have yet to acquire an N-Frame from that time period, but I'm hopeful.

I hail from "10 Years After," vintage '64.

But, I do have a 1954 .22/32 Kit Gun, Model of 1953 -Improved I-Frame and a 1954 Winchester Model 12, 16 Ga.
Both have been featured in other threads, but for the sake of a nod to a good year, here they are again. :)

My dad was born was born in late 1934 (a month before Elvis) and I like to think 1954-era firearms were what he cut his teeth on -and, he's indicated as much.

Nice Highway Patrolman. I have S111760 that shipped June 9, 1954. I was 6. I have a 38 M&P shipped 3 months after me and a 22/32 (Oct 1954).

Yes, it was a very good year.

I was shipped to this planet in June '54, beating my wife by 64 days. We had that planned. She was actually supposed to get here first but took a wrong turn in Albuquerque... (you'll know the reference)

Closest I have is a very nice June '57 4-screw Pre-29.
Hoping to someday find a '54 K-22 Masterpiece!

OR you could be smart and drive a '53 Special with the last of the straight eights!
