First Year Revolvers

Here's a 1950 first year (post-war) Pre-27. Not sure if that really counts?

Yes, I'm sure that pre-27 counts, and its a beauty. Which reminded me I have one of those from 1950 as well; although not as pretty as it served with the KCPD and went back to the mothership for a re-finish in 1982.

Jeff, maybe not as pretty as the Pre-27 posted by spin132, but impressive nevertheless. I believe yours is the only 3.5" KCPD Pre-27 that has surfaced on this Forum. I think it's worthy of more than a thumbnail, and if there are others out there I would sure like to see them!

Terry, according to Dr. Jinks letter it (S77886) shipped to the KCPD on September 26, 1950 as part of a 4 gun shipment (along with S79149, S79665, S79842) to Kansas City Police Dept via Richards & Conover Howe Company, Kansas City, Missouri. And thanks for the enlargement, one of these days I've got to get around to setting up that feature.

Here are three Models of 1899 in .38 caliber, shipped in 1899. Two are targets, and one is an M&P.

The first one is sn 1740, a 4-inch blue M&P, shipped 9/19/1899.

Beautiful stocks on those first 2. Wow!

Here's another "almost" first year (shipped within the first six months).

.38 Chiefs Special serial number 72, shipped March 7, 1951. Engraved to F.M. (Flora Mason) Van Orden, co-owner of Evaluators Limited Gun Shop in Quantico, Virginia.

The first Chiefs Special shipped October 27, 1950, to S&W President C.R. Hellstrom. It was serial number 6, and thanks very much to Bill Cross for providing the order on that one.

Only 19 .38 Chiefs Specials shipped in 1950, serial numbered from 6 to 59, showing once again the company didn't assemble or ship its products in serial number order. I'd love to have one of those, and I know where a few reside, but I haven't brought myself to pay the tariff.

Serial number 72 has all the earliest appointments, which didn't last long in the production run: original (postwar leftover ?) thumbpiece, service grips, bright blue finish (reportedly reserved for those early Chiefs Specials S&W gave as gifts), smooth trigger, and half-round front sight.

I believe that I have five first-year revolvers:

357 Magnum Highway Patrolman, 4", S114xxx, 1954, with original box!
44 Magnum, 6.5", S147xxx, 1956. Nice old shooter with coke stocks.
624 Model of 1985 .44 Target Stainless, 4", AHBxxxx, 1985.
640-1 .357 Magnum Centennial, BUExxxx, 1995. And another with BUF prefix.
329 Night Guard, CMNxxxx, 2008. Stings like a wasp when I shoot it.

Here are two more first-year .38 K-frames.

The first gun is a 6.5" blue target Model of 1902, serial number 21898, shipped 8/8/1902.

The second gun is a 4" blue M&P Model of 1905, serial number 58652, shipped 6/9/1905. This model was introduced at serial number 58000 of the 1902 series, and both models then shared the same serial number series, until the beginning of WW2. The upcoming next engineering change (for both of these models) occurs at serial number 62450, so there is only 4450 .38 revolvers in this serial number range. It takes approximately a year and a half to produce these 4450 guns.
