What would you do? Veterans only

Was in local cop shop picking up some decent priced ammo. Went to check out , there was a guy in front of me, he pointed to the 15% discount on Mondays sign and asked, " what about me". Clerk asked if he had a Veterans ID, guy said no, clerk said discount is Only for Veterans or LEO. Guy got a smart - - - look on his face and said," where can I get or steal a Veterans ID"? Clerk did not answer but I knew he wanted to so I told him, I would not advise you doing that, I would not like it and am sure plenty of other Veterans wouldn't either. Guy walked to door but looked like he was waiting around. I mentioned to the clerk he might get his - - - beat if few younger guys I know heard him ( Gulf war Veterans). Where is the thread about stupidity in the general public??????

As a Veteran, I'd ask the guy if he'd like a ride to the nearest recruiting office. I put on the uniform for 32 years and won't pull any punches when it comes to the Freeloaders in our country. I also question those who stand on a corner with the word "Veteran" on their cardboard sign.

I'm a veteran. Where can I get a veteran's ID? (Okay, looked it up, and I found it. But I had never heard of this until today.)

Of course, every deal I've run across in the last few years was for active duty or retirees, not just veterans. I guess we usually don't count.

When I renewed my Florida DL this past December, I showed them a copy of my DD-214 that I keep on my phone and they noted it on my new license. Prior to that, I used the DD-214 copy to get registered at Lowes and wherever else a Veterans discount is offered. Veterans discounts are everywhere. I don't seek them out as often as my wife would like me to, but she'll be sure to inquire about them whenever we're out together. I guess it's better than being pimped out for a senior citizen discount

Just got a 10% discount on a large purchase at Home Depot, when I showed my Vet ID. I know Lowe's gives Vet discounta also. If you belong to Vet's orgs, like DAV & American Legion I think their web pages have links to businesses that give Vet discounts. Ed

I was a draft volunteer (to speed things up). I am still a proud veteran.
Either you were or you were not. Still annoyed at the "stolen valor" issue.
It's on my driver's license. Took my 214 to get that put on there.
Lots of us U.S. soldiers did their job well. Kinda figured they missed us.
Long ago, and pretty mellow about it all. Canada kids and fakers annoy me nonetheless. Some of just thought it was our turn.

When I separated from the USMC in 1965 I got a pink inactive reserve ID card.

In IL you can bring your DD214 to the drivers License bureau and they will add VETERAN to your license. Do it at normal renewal time and no additional cost. Any other time the cost of a replacement license (was $5 a couple years ago).

Both our local Home Depot and Loews give a 10% discount for veteran.

Our HyVee grocery store has a close in parking spot reserved for Fire, Police, Active Duty and Veterans.

I keep a few bucks in my console, but if someone is using a kid or dog for a prop or puts "veteran" on their sign I don't even roll down the window. If someone looks like my dead brother (lifelong alcoholic) and needs dough for a drink (or whatever) I'll hand over a dollar or two.

I have the Vet endorsement on my DL and will generally use it at Cabelas and Tiny Bubbles Liquor Store.

As far as the OP's situation I'd just shrug it off. Lots of jerks in the world.

In Oregon it is easy. Just bring your DD214 to DMV and your driver's license will now have the Veteran stamp on it.

Home Depot has initiated an online registry for Veterans discount. Then download the app and bring up the funny little scan thingie at checkout. It is also limiting the discount to $400 annually. My local store stopped using IDs the end of April. Lowes has a n online registry also but used your phone number to bring it up. No annual limit as far as I know.

The Purple Heart medal provides me with a free set of license plates every year. Disabled veteran benefits provide me with a lifetime small game & fishing license and free access to state parks.

Asking for a veteran discount? Low class. Demanding a veteran discount without documentation? Zero class. Holding up the check-out line while making a scene? Sub-par performance.

I remember coming home from Vietnam and finding a world in which GIs were not particularly welcome. Nice restaurants and stores had signs "NO DOGS. NO SOLDIERS" and no uniforms were allowed. Commanding General of Fort Benning, Georgia issued orders prohibiting off-duty personnel from wearing the uniform outside the post to avoid protests and ugly demonstrations. Popular TV shows and movies featured Vietnam veterans only as psychotic killers and drug-addicted criminals.

Somehow, over the years, veterans all became heroes and camouflage clothing became a fashion statement. I don't understand it, but I assume that Hollywood and politicians are cashing in somehow.

Grateful for the benefits I receive, but I can't imagine demanding a discount or expecting someone to give me anything.

I had a classmate whose daughter hooked up with, got pregnant with, and married an Iraqi War vet. With PSTD, didn't like fireworks, etc. Or so he said.

Turns out, he washed out of boot camp, and was a total poser. Finally got called out and exposed by real Iraqi War vets with the DD214's and scars to prove it. And this was after he treated my classmate's daughter like ****.

I never asked, but I hope some of those real Veterans kicked the living **** out of him to show him the error of his ways.
