I just picked up a 64-6 that had Uncle Mike rubber grips on it. I grabbed some Hogue rubbers for it because the UMs were a bit big for me. The Hogues fit my hand nicely but fit the gun terribly along the backstrap and as such are not particularly comfortable to fire. I need something better. I am looking at Badger, VZ, and Altamont right now but I am having trouble discerning some things from the pics. Due to my small hands I prefer to have something not too bulky front to back but I do like finger grooves. The VZ don't cover the backstrap but am not sure about the others. Any help or other suggestions are welcome.

I had been eyeing the VZ grips and got some for my M66 a couple months ago.
They feel great, but on the small side. So they might be right up your alley.
I would not want them any smaller, and my hands are average.

I looked at the round to square version of the VZ and the bottom looked bigger than I like, similar to a set of S&W Targets.
I do wish I'd have gone with the rougher Tactical Diamond texture though, you can always smooth it some if it is too rough.

The smoother VZ 320's like mine give a better grip than you'd expect, it's just not a lot.
Mine are the "Dirty Olive" but I also like the Black Cherry flavor.

About 15 years ago I had a nickel 10 and 13 both square butt. I hate the square butt. My dream would be a 4" round butt pencil barrel 10 but they don't exist.

Those do look nice. Is it a nice smooth flush fit along the back?

OP, you didn't mention square butt or round butt. I got a pair off ebay from Thailand for my 64 RB. Great fit, finger grooves and checkered. I like them so much I ordered a second pair for the other 64. Good price and did not take long to receive them in the mail.

If you can find some Ahrend's Grips like the retro combat or retro target you would like them . Kim Ahrend knew how to design grips to fit the normal persons hand and they fit my N - K - and J frame revolvers as good as any and better than most .
My avatar (model 58 S&W) is sporting Ahrend's Retro Combats in dark red cocobolo and really fit both the N-frame and my hand .

I sure do miss his work and dealing with Kim ... he is a nice person .

65-2

I am a fan of Hogue grips. I have them on all my revolvers. Even the carry ones (442-1 and SP101).

I have Badger grips on a 25-2 and 19-3. Fit is good on the gun and also my hand. Back strap is not covered. Really help to improve control and felt recoil is reduced.

Aroth,
Does your 64-6 have "boot" grips (exposed back strap and butt), like this 65-3?

Or another UM model that covers the back strap and the butt? Sort of like on this 15-2?

I find the boot grips to be a bit too small, for my ham-ands, but still quite comfortable, even with full-house .357's. Love a round butt's ability to handle recoil. Fit/finish is as good as rubber can be. If you don't have boot grips, you might seek out a set.

You didn't mention which Houges you tried, but most my k/L round butts have the houge Bantams on them. These are smaller than the regular Houges.

It had Uncle Mikes like on that 15 and slapped on the Hogue monogrip on it. But the fit along the backstrap sucks. It feels better in my hand based on size but sucks when shooting.

I bought a lot of Hogues in the past, but the last few sets I ended up trimming them down. The K and L frame Hogues are just bigger than I like. Easy enough to reduce the Hogues that come uncheckered.
I took these Cocobolo Hogues off several times to thin and round the bottom more, I finally have them feeling like I want them.

I have some slightly smaller (scaled down ?) checkered Goncalo Alves
Hogues on a M63 and they are perfect for my hand, no thinning needed.
