Swiss shooting 2022

More than anything, for me at least, is the lack of courtesy and civility.
Of course, safety, but that flows from courtesy and civility. There are way too many wanna-be commandos on public ranges. I'm fortunate to have a private range on family property. A lot of people want to use it. Unfortunately, many have been extended the courtesy and due to their behavior, have not been invited back. I don't think I'm being too sensitive, either. It only takes one lapse, one errant negligent shot, one careless moment and the civil liability closes the range for all, maybe permanently. I enjoy reading of your Swiss ranges. They are something to aspire to.

Glorious day at the outdoor range in canton Valais

The range officer was unwell so we had to cut the session short

I had some .45 ACP left so I fired some more rounds with my 1943 type II Remington Rand 1911 A1 before leaving

Feeling a little frustrated, I headed to another range nearby. It's a military style one so calibers are restricted to ordnance (which means 9 mm or less here). I only had one, an HK P8

A great day in the end

Nice day indeed.

BTW, saw an article about sanctions on Russian Lead, with Switzerland's munitions being their formerly largest customer. Might want to stock up a bit.

Interesting. Would you have a link? Or remember in which media ?

I've stocked up as much as I could, I think I'm good for a few years

Couldn't find the exact story, but this one covers most of the points I saw.

Yeah, kinda figured you weren't personally running short of ammo.

End June a dozen members of my shooting club participated in the canton (state) Vaud shooting. Each of the 26 Swiss canton organises a state shooting competition every five or six years or so. Distances are 25 and 50 m for pistol (300 meter for rifles).

There are typically four categories for pistols, Rimfire, Ordinance, centrefire, free pistol. There are various discipline, Precision, Speed, duel etc. Targets used are precision and speed targets ISSF

I used the Pardini Rimfire and a SIG P210–6 ordnance pistol. Trigger pull is checked and a sticker is applied to the gun when it passes. 1000 grams for rimfire, 1360 gr for (old) ordnance pistols (1500 for newer ones)

Results. There is a threshold to reach, which varies with weapon used and age group, to obtain a distinction. That distinction then gives you a medal or a voucher

Out of the ten disciplines I chose, I obtained seven distinctions and missed two by one point. The medals are different depending on how many distinctions you've got. I ask why it's only written five distinction on my printout result sheet, they answered that this is the highest you can get

I went back on Sunday to try and obtain the 25 m grand mastery in the ordnance category

This consists of 60 shots, 30 precision and 30 duel speed, meaning the target appears three seconds and disappears seven seconds

The threshold to obtain the grand mastery in the ordnance pistol category is 505 points. If you mess up you'll have to wait another five or six years to try again. Also you can only obtain it once per state. A few of the senior shooters have managed all 26 probably over a 30 years period

I like that tracked target trolly system. Your ranges and competitions are so neat and organized. Congratulations on your scoring, and thank you again for sharing.

BTW, one of your sponsors makes one of my favorite cheeses, which is a staple food in my home. Glad to help.

Tuesdays and Saturdays are reserved for Rimfire at my club, in order to reduce the noise burden for the neighbourhood

At 50 m, I shot the 1975 Colt SP1 with a CMMG conversion, reliable, accurate and tons of cheap fun

And the Browning / FN trombone pump action

Moved on to the 25 m range and used a P210-1 with a .22lr conversion

We have a couple of new member at the club, including a 27 years young lady. She had shot maybe twice in her life with her sister (an army lieutenant) before joining us in early July. I've coached her a bit and lent her some guns as she does not have any yet.

We shot maybe six or eight times together. She produced this group at 25 meters with my 1960 S&W model 17 (offhand)

Needless to say she has great natural skills and a progression speed I haven't seen before

Had one of those pump action .22s in my hands at Cabela's gun library, and had a hard time putting it down. Nice.

Your new protege is doing real well.

Wish all of Switzerland a happy 731st birthday, on this the National Day, anniversary of the Helvetic Confederation being formed at Ruetli Meadow.

Thank you. Due to drought all fireworks and fires had to be cancelled and forbidden

So I took the young lady to another outdoor shooting range which allows a broader range of weapons

She shot the Colt M4

And finally back to handguns with a Dan Wesson 15-2 VH in .357 magnum at 25 meters.

She had to aim a bit lower and to the left in order to hit the middle, making it even harder.

Way to go! Good for her!

Yesterday was another .22 only session at the local club. I was alone, seems my shooting buddies lost their motivation at the end of this season, it felt like it was my own private range.

I started with rifles, the Ruger precision and Savage Mk II. After checking that they were still well sighted in on paper, I scattered 3 dozen golf balls on the berm 55 meters away, and had a ton of fun making them dance and fly around

05c6fb7873624fc5f8a0bf9d88520668.jpg

I read abt that on a forum. I also had a similar session with our new young members a few weeks ago, the smile on their faces says it all

Then I aspired to some calm, so I installed the Norwegian A-Tec silencer I recently bought

Since I switched from high velocity to standard velocity ammo, the point of impact was 2 inches low and 1 inch to the left, with both rifles. I didn't feel like messing with the scope settings so I just used some good old Kentucky windage

Very nice shooting and scores in the first section of this post.
I do like the "Green" muzzle blast system that you have, over there !!

Nice to see the ladies take part, also, even with BIG load revolvers,
now that's what I'm talking about. Go get um girl.

Sorry about those darn "Flyers" that happen now and then, to mess with a good target.
I hate it when you are patting yourself on the back and that shows up !!

Thank you for the great post and a look at some super nice guns.

Very nice thread! And that young lady definitely is exceptional. I once had a girlfriend who could outshoot me with my Model 41, but recoil unnerved her and she didn't do well with anything else. That your friend handles the DW .357 so well is something of a sensation, in my opinion. Good for her!

I was brought up using Kentucky windage with only iron sights on our guns, when I was young.

Back then we spent our money on ammo and not costly scopes.

Looking at that target;
1" right of the number "7" should be just about, "Plumb handy", partner.
