Was looking at a S & W 29 - 1 for sale on line and the ad said one of only fifty to exist. I admit I rarely see 29 - 1 but does this sound right?

It's a rare revolver. My SCSW is not close at hand but I would think that number would be somewhat accurate.Someone with a little more knowledge on 29-1`s should be along shortly. There were more 6 1/2`s than others, only made a short time before the 29-2`s came along.

Wow, so it is true they are that rare? I have a pre mod 29 4 screw and 5 screw. I had no idea it got more rare than that. Ok hold up and I 'll get the info.

Below is a photo of Model 29-1, S220004, 4-screw frame, nickel finish. One of two known, shipped in December 1962. Click on the photo for a better look.

Truly rare S&W revolvers and even without original stocks, refinished, altered in any way, they will still bring insanely high sale prices.

I worked in a gun store in Oakland California in 1977, an older gentleman came into the store and sold his .44 mag. I told the owner that I wanted it and he told me I would have to pay full retail for it, about $230 later I was the owner of a 29-1, I guess it was a better price than what I thought, at the time. The original presentation case was stolen years ago but I still have the revolver, if the gentleman 22hipower ?,would care to check his records to see if it is listed (doubtful). It's a three screw #S228875. Someday I may attempt to dig it out of the safe and post a photo, something I've never attempted. It does have cokes and a very minimal amount of wear on the barrel and cylinder, from memory and it has the most common 6.5" barrel.

I think it's S 227235. Three screw.

This is correct. You ever look at True Value Guns. The prices listed sold are 1/3 rd what I end up paying on Gunbroker. I would like to know where these guns are for sale?

Well I got into a bidding war on the 29 - 1. I think I raised my bid at the end about eight times against only one other bidder. Sold for around $4,850 which was my last bid. I would have gone higher if I had not bought a few guns in the last two months.

Well, good try anyway. I watched and it went for a little more than I thought it might. There will be another for you to chase I'm sure; patience. Another (#53) popped up today too by another Forum member. Hope he posts pictures.

That's the way it seems to go....you buy a few toys you really didn't need, deplete the play money, and then along comes something you really want! Been there, done that.

That one sold for $4850 plus sales tax, the GB sales tax carrying charge (about 1.5%), shipping, and possibly transfer. Well over $5,000 for a 6.5" with good blue but quite obviously shot. Significant turn ring, muzzle loss, flash marks on frame flats (behind cylinder). Some flattening of the grip checking IRRC. Presentation case with interior wear and missing some tools.

Surprised to see it sell that high but happy as the owner of a much nicer 6.5 incher if that is the new normal.

Well, I retired 2 months ago and have bought a as new pre model 29 4 screw and 5 screw. Mint. Along with other unfired 44 magnums for a collection. You gotta draw the line somewhere. I would love to have owned it ,just not meant to be.
