We were rinsed with ST-37 (something like Listerine and burnt like the blazes!), then had BFI powder (a sulfur based anti-bacterial) dumped in the wound, and back on the bike! That made a yellowly-brown crust. That was 1965! Don't need no stinking stitches!

Ah yes. Swabbing the kids with mercury and then checking the fit of their shoes with x-rays.

Mom kept mercurochrome and merthiolate around. My brother and I often looked like we had been Earl Sheibed.
Don't forget the paragouric sp?
So young to be so cynical!
I still use hydrogen peroxide a lot to take blood spots out of clothing and bedsheets.
For really bad crime scenes I use liquid oxyclean.

Mom was also an RN. Which meant, barring a severed artery or 2 she didn't much disturb herself. She was fond of saying, "Rub it. It'll feel better."

I avoided even letting my mom find out about cuts and scrapes because she would want to swab them down with mercurochrome/merthiolate, both stung worse than the original injury. For really deep cuts, rashes and burns we had this stuff called Cross Salve that was a bluish/greenish/grayish Vaseline like stuff. Cross Salve didn't hurt and it did seem to prevent infection and promote healing, it was just nasty looking and smelling stuff. We had a great big old Tomcat that came home one morning with a big ole hole in his neck from tangling with some sort of critter. Dad held Tom down and mom packed the hole with Cross Salve and then they wrapped up his neck. Tom wasn't very happy but he didn't try to remove the bandage and after a couple bandage changes and a remarkably short period of time Tom's neck wound healed up. Tom was never the same though and he never wanted to stay out all night again.

Iodine, the ultimate purifier.
Blisto-Sol., 666's, CastorOil and Black Draught........Germs/bacteria and viruses would run from this stuff.

Oh yeah remember that stuff very well. I had lots of it and methiolate swabbed on back in in the 50's. Stung like crazy but it sure seemed to work. It burned so much it prevented casual whining and crying over some minor wound.
I hadn't thought about that stuff in decades. You sure know how to make a guy feel old! 
My folks had 4 boys and always kept a bottle of mercurochrome in the house. I had no idea it was banned in the USA.
We also had a brown Bayer aspirin bottle half full of mercury in the basement. I remember playing with it! Now days, they'd condemn the house and declare it a hazmat site!

Both were widely used, but merthiolate stung worse than mercurochrome when applied to an open cut. I heard the use of these was eventually discouraged because they tended to actually rot the skin after continued use; such rumor may have no validity.

Try and find methiolate now, nothing like the good ole days.

Dont remember the Chrome stinging but seemed to work on scrapes and cuts. Didnt want iodine used that stuff stung.
