I was getting treated with Mercurochrome by my mother and grandmother back in the mid 1950's and beyond.

In my early teens dad would heat up Rock and Rye for me to sip when I was croupy.

Violet Wound Dressing.. I still have a bottle of that and have been known to use it on myself. That and a can of Bag Balm.. Use the Bag Balm on chapped lips.

My mom would give me a half
jigger of creme de menthe.
I'd then sleep my cough and cold
away in hours.
Today, I think a bit of creme de
menthe splashed on vanilla ice
cream is just yummy.

I have been known to do that with either Crème De Cacao or Káhlua.
Purple Salve. Was used to treat boils, cuts, fungus and more. Good enough for the dogs, cats, and kids. Mercurochrome and iodine were also in the medical bag growing up as a kid. How did we all survive?

The black tar smelling drawing salve is still available as Ichthammol salve.

One could ask, Why are some of the finest first aid treatments only outlawed in America?

Just looked on Amazon and you can by Mecurochrome still, its just mercury free.
an old girlfriend's mom used that all the time. It worked too.
Its the Practice of Medicine!!!
Used to get my throat "painted" with mercurochrome on a swab to cure a sore throat by my mom. Make you cough big time, but the scratchy pain was gone immediately.

Kerosene will take the sting and soreness out of a festering cut. I don't know why but it does work. Learned that in the 70's working in a box factory. Paper cuts happened often and sometimes were bad. Probably violates many OSHA rules but it was universal in that plant.
two fingers Whiskey (4 roses), hot water, lemon juice, and suger mixed together and drunked while warm cures everything including a broken heart.
I got mercurochromed a few times as a kid. Dad called it "monkey blood."

I do, as a paramedic we carried them as a standard antidote to acute Cyanide poisonings as we had experienced patients suffering that due to a chemical silver recovery process. We also carried Morphine, Versed and a few others that were inventoried at every shift change and signed for and as an officer I had to countersign the inventory sheet.
