Do you have any comfort food recipes? This is from 4B's in Montana where I was born and raised.

1 (29 oz.) can diced tomatoes
1 (10.5 oz.) can condensed chicken broth, undiluted
2 Tablespoons margarine or butter
2 Tablespoons white sugar
1 Tablespoon chopped onion
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
2 Cups of heavy cream or half-and-half.
Directions:
1. In a large stock pot mix tomatoes, chicken broth, margarine, onion, and baking soda. Simmer for 1 hour.
2. In a separate pot, heat cream over a low heat until hot, watching carefully so that the cream does not scorch!(see below) Once heated through add to tomato soup and serve.

TIP: Use 2 sauce pans for cream. Create a 'double boiler', by putting small amount of water in one and place other sauce pan on top with cream. This will heat cream without scorching.

Of course there will be some ham and beans with cornbread.

Yum

So looking forward to the big switch over from summer salads to winter soups. I love to make soup, many kinds. Always with bread.

My wife makes great soups. Pretty much always she starts with boiling up and simmering what's left of a rotisserie chicken carcass to make the broth.

(We get a lotta milage outta those supermarket rotisserie chickens.)

Potato Soup: Pretty much mashed potatoes (Russets) but thinned down with milk and a little cream if you like. Include bacon, onion and some bay leaves.

Split pea soup: Dry split peas, water or stock, smoked ham hocks, bay leaves and thyme.

I left out detailed instructions. I figure most of us can figure out how much and how long!

Now that you mention it, chocolate chip cookie soup sounds good! Unfortunately, I don't have a clue of how to make it. But even if I did, I'd probably eat the ingredients before they ever went into the pot.

Step 1: fill bowl.
Step 2: add milk.
Step 3: let stand for 30 minutes.
Step 4: microwave.

When I have Ham and Beans I don’t want soup.
For the Holy Days I buy a big sliced ham.
Cook it , give a bunch to my kids.
I eat some and then get down to the bone.
It’s Ham and Bean time.
Cook up a batch of ham and beans, Navy or Great Northern.
Give some to my kids, eat a lot, freeze the rest.
Like it best with Corn Pone cooked in cast iron skillet.

Hard to beat split pea soup. And, yes, anybody can figure it out without a recipe. In addition to ham or ham hocks, I like to add fresh sliced carrots, chopped onion, and chopped celery. Before serving, top it with some hot curry powder, tabasco, and coarse ground or fresh ground black pepper.

I make beef stew a few times a year. The problem is I don't have a recipe; I just chuck in whatever feels right at the time. It's always good, though. It always has beef, beef stock, tomatoes, and assorted other veg. which will vary from batch to batch. Sometimes some pasta. Sometimes some rice. Sometimes a little barley. Just whatever strikes my fancy while shopping for ingredients.

Here's one of my old standbys...vegetable beef soup.

Start off by browning about 1½ pounds of hamburger, drain. Add about 4 cans of beef broth. One can of red kidney beans, drained and rinsed. One can of green beans, juice and all. One chopped onion. Four or five carrots, chopped. Four or five potatoes, chopped. About four or five cloves of garlic, minced. One can of stewed tomatoes. One can of tomato paste. One can of corn.

Bring to a boil and simmer for an hour or so.

NOTE: You'll notice in the instructions that I listed canned vegetables. I did that in case there are some of you who might not have access to a garden or to fresh vegetables. If you have fresh vegetables, so much the better.

Serve with a hot buttered chunk of homemade sourdough bread.:)
