A few years back my nephew was in rural Georgia. A man he met "Mike", was visiting with them and they mentioned South America. Mikes' wife asked "honey do we live in North America or South America"? M

Mike replied that "we live in America and it don't get more Southern than right here. Of course we live in South America".

30 years ago, that's the question I heard in California, from young American adults in positions of authority at the bank and at the DMV, when I presented my Maine drivers license as ID.

They did not realize that there was a state in this country called Maine, and needed to contact others and verify it existed. Today, these people would be around 60 years old, so no, it's nothing new, nor the exclusive domain of the young.

Were dumb kids with me in school, I graduated in 1991

Dad was telling me of the dumb kids in school with him, he graduated in 1960.

Guess what- my grand parents used to talk of the dumb kids they grew up with.

Nothing new, just easier to see dumb people cuz of the internet.

Well… having a hard time not thinking of them as a "special kind of stupid", as the saying goes. Back when the earth was flat (60's + 70's) teachers taught the basics. If you didn't learn it, generally, that was on you. The difference today, I feel, is that "the basics" isn't even on the curriculum any more. If they aren't teaching it, you can't learn it.
God save the Republic, in any case.

How time flies.

Had no cash to tip an ATT tech that installed a new modem/gateway, rewired a bit etc etc, did it quick and right, so I gave the young man a Morgan Silver dollar.
Ten minutes later he comes back and says that I gave him way too much, as he googled it, and said it's worth 2K.
Honest kid but not up on coin value etc etc.
He got to see an O scope in action and will continue with learning more advanced skills using electron excitation.
He and his young bride live in the area... so music lessons are free for his kids... when the stork arrives.

One thing we need to remember is a video like this is only showing the ones that can't answer the questions and not the ones that have no trouble answering them. Believe it or not, there are some really smart ones out there too.

My Grandnephew just got his EE in four and my VA Doc's kid just got his in four as well. She bought him a Les Paul, when he was 14, but MIT came a calling to distract from the seductive lure of music.

My late high school friend Bert "Chili" Challis was a comedy staff writer for Jay Leno and Bob & Tom. He once told me that when the video crews came into the editing room after recording "Jaywalking" episodes the bulk of the material was dumped as a lot of folks answered the questions correctly.
