Model 57 - Odd Ported Barrel

I have a thing for custom and ported revolvers and couldn't/didn't resist bidding and winning this Model 57 No Dash with odd ported barrel. The 41 magnum is my favorite large caliber. I don't understand this underside barrel porting set up so I'm reaching out to y'all for input and comments.
One thing I do know, it's a great shooter. It has an 8# DA and 3# SA crisp trigger pull.
I would appreciate your comments. Please share your thoughts, the good as well as the bad.

I am at a loss. It would seem that the ports on the bottom would INCREASE muzzle flip, which is exactly opposite what porting is supposed to do.

Not sure what that bottom porting is all about, but that gun looks good. It reminds me of a tank for some reason.

Can't help with info about the ports, but that is one fine looking revolver.

Someone who didn't understand porting did that one. There was a lot of experimenting with comps and porting back then.

I suspect someone did that with a mill. Can't be entirely sure, but to me it looks like the side ports are angle cut so as to direct gases slightly forward, which would increase the rearward impulse felt during firing. The ports on the bottom of the barrel would increase muzzle rise. Basically, the porting does everything opposite of what is desired in porting. If this were my Model 57, I'd either have the barrel replaced or have a really, really good gunsmith shorten it to eliminate those hideous ports.

The first Highway Patrolman (28-2) that I purchased had a couple of funky small ports drilled into each side of the barrel. I guess that's partly why I got such a good deal on it! As they are, I don't think that those holes actually reduce felt recoil at all. Several years ago I contacted Mag-na-port to see if they could re-machine those holes into Mag-na-ports for me, but unfortunately they said it couldn't be done. Bummer. Your Model 57 certainly does have some interesting porting...like most of the other Forum members, the ports don't seem to make sense to me, but I think they look cool.

That style of porting would be fairly effective with 5 or 6 holes on each side.

I saw one like that in a North Carolina pawn shop back around Labor Day. The porting was well done.

Odd design or not, if it shoots good, that's all that matters. You didn't say what you paid, but if I had known about the auction I certainly would have been a bidder.

I have the same thought. As soon as I can get a friend to help with camera right around dusk,
we'll see what fire it breathes.

Hope cat does not pass under barrel when it happens.

Hmmm, careful with the bench rest shooting. Bottom ports, what were they thinking other than it looked cool.

Did anybody notice the Red Ramp has been replaced with a plain ramp?
Maybe cause it melts the red inserts?

It's a 6"

Yep, that is a 6 inch barrel. Cut that puppy to 4 inches and it will be a great fields and woods carry revolver.
