I HATE PAYING INSURANCE (and taxes)

Subsidies for moats, redoubts, pillboxes and turrets? Cool!
Well..... A pillbox would probably qualify, since the specifications are for strengthening the building envelope.

Had something like this in mind.....

One of the most irritating things about all this is that in this area your personal property taxes and your homeowner's insurance bills all arrive about this time of year. Two big chunks of money leaving you at the same time if you decide to pay it in full.

Luckily our sharp elected officials have lowered the highway tolls, so that will save you money while driving around and living in your car, as you can't afford home insurance.
Doubled in the last three years.

States should start home insurance plans.
Fraud monitored and prosecuted as necessary.

Might have to charge Santa landing fees.

I just paid my homeowners for this year and it has doubled since last year even though I have NEVER filed a claim.

Rates are based upon the "risk pool", everyone within the same geographic and demographic group.

Individual claim history is not the determining factor. Excessive claims may cause the company to decline renewal. Prior claims history (regardless of the insurer) may cause denial of a new policy.

As the OP noted, most states have "assigned risk" policies that can make coverage available to just about everyone, but the premiums can be ugly.

I was recently doing research into moving to Texas. The property taxes there are outrageous, although not quite to Ohio or New Jersey levels. The homes I researched started with $4200/year taxes in most places. That's $350/month. Finding newer homes with taxes over $5k/year was not a problem. ;) So tell me, what are the wonderful government services you are getting with all that money?

No state income tax. Higher than average sales taxes and property taxes. Maybe it all balances out?

When I called Leavenworth who are actually called AFI, Armed Forces Insurance I expected them to tell me about the Risk Pool.
But they told me that in my situation it was just New Mexico going up?
And USAA gave me a rate like last year from AFI.
Both of these companies are member owned.
Have to say, I have received more surplus -profit from USAA than I have from AFI.
It comes just before Christmas and I'm grateful.
With the massive claims, lots of USAA folks in Florida, could be slim pickings this Dec!

I thought Florida already had that in some form? The basic issue is that if you live where a single event can destroy property to the tune of estimated $67 billion (estimate I saw for Ian) then you can expect to pay through the nose for your insurance.

You can thank the FL governor who got rid of the regs on building in vulnerable locations for a chunk of these costs. He did it because the regs were "restricting growth". Maybe he needs a trip to Fort Myers to get a better idea of how growth doesn't always work.

I think a large chunk of our taxes goes toward paying the government to stay out of our business, rather than strangling us with "social services".

Err, what? So what do they spend your money on?

Unless your home has a mortgage no one says you have to have
insurance, of course if something happens it is on your dime.
Income tax, be rich enough to game the tax codes or make a lot
less money.
For most of us neither of these are a good choice.
