The prices paid for signing the Declaration of Independence

Why does anyone think Snopes is the last word? Because they say they are? Screw snopes and anyone else who tries to tarnish the memory of these great men.

Just a question: is it tarnishing their memory to correct mistaken information about them, if it can be shown that it's incorrect? For example, when the date and cause of someone's death is a matter of record? I'm kind of a history buff, as you may have seen above, and I like the true story about great, important figures of the past.

It doesn't diminish at all what we owe these men. They did put their lives and fortunes on the line. Their stories don't need to be embellished.

I question snopes as the arbitor of truth. Why are they considered infallible and unerring? Wikipedia has been proven time and again to be misleading and I don't trust snopes anymore than I do them. It seems most media has a bias and an agenda and I take them all with a grain of salt. In the refuting of Rush's dad's essay they had a couple mispellings and some speculation on what really happened. I'm good with Rush's dad's version.

I just wish snopes and other like "protectors of journalistic truths" would perform the same diligence on today's fictional accounts of those who wander the halls in Washington DC.

Like others have said, never take a single source, always do your own homework, and hold those accountable for their statements! THAT'S the way they used to teach it :)

What is truly amazing is these men sacrificed for something intangible. It was conjecture only. Nothing had been established other than freedom at the signing. It was all speculation that this Great Experiment would work. There was no structure, no currency, no allies, no guarantees nothing to fall back on but a sure death sentence if they were to fail. The fortitude of these men is inconceivable in today's world. Thank you to the OP for reminding us of the price paid for the treasure we hold.
