S&W J-frame serial numbering, the 1J variety is confusing at best. Can anyone tell me a manufacturing date for an S&W Model 38, .38 Special revolver with a serial number of 1J46570?

Yes. 1983.

Notice that your serial number has a total of six numeric digits. 1J numbers with six digits are from 1982 or later. All the 1J numbers from the 1970-73 period (roving J) had five or fewer digits.

The 1Jxxxxx serial numbers began in 1982 and ended in 1983. According to Dr. Jinks, the series began at 1J00001, and the last number in the series is 1J47502. Models included in the series are 36, 37, 38, and 49. Shipping months in the database range from August '82 to January '83, but I have fewer than 40 from that series in the database, and I only have shipping dates on eight of those.

My S&W J frame is 5 digits 82xxx it also has a 1/2 moon with two lines inside as well as an S and D. Any idea what that means. It was purchased NIB in 1968 or69.
