The P-51 Mustang is one of those airplanes that would be instantly recognizable as a fighter, even if you didn't know that beforehand. (The F-86 Sabre and the F-4 Phantom also fall into that category.)

What strikes me about the Mustang, and the men who flew it, is how different their battles were back then compared to anything that would take place today...an up-close-and-personal high-speed gunfight, five miles up. Wow...
