For some time a quality online ammo seller has been selling 1000 rounds of brass cased 115 gr FMJ 9mm for $299 and $14.99 shipping. IMHO the price of 9mm will not be going down significantly in the foreseeable future and the time has come to stock up.

Do you agree?

What was the 9mm plinking price in Feb. 2020? Probably about $0.14 per round?

You go on ammoseek you can find it for about 0.22 a round without horrible shipping. And if you buy enough you get "free" shipping.

With the 8% inflation, I think we're getting close to a "new normal" floor.

So yes, I think we're getting close.

(close to $0.30/round for 9mm is pretty steep, by the way).

My preferred 9mm range ammo, MagTech 115gr, was (briefly—until it sold out) $259 shipped from my usual retailer today. I'm not holding my breath for $200/case, but I think sub-$300 will be the norm soon.

9 MM ammo prices.

Cabelas has been selling Herters (Winchester) 115 gr FMJ ammo for $15.99 a box in Delaware, when they have it.
Last week I was able to purchase a 1,000 round case of 124 gr brass case ammo for $220. 00, so the prices are coming down a bit. I asked the owner of the shop when he expected the price to come down and he said when the man in the White House changes.

I have about 1,500 rounds of factory 9mm ammo on hand. I also have about 2,000 reloads and another 10,000 pieces of brass and the primers, powder and bullets to load them up. I won't be spending over $300 to buy 1,000 rounds of 9mm or anything else but to answer your original question, I do feel prices will come down as soon as fuel prices come back down to fairly normal levels.

No. As others have mentioned SG ammo briefly had Magtech on sale for $260/case. It sold out quickly but more is coming at that price. They also have S&B 9mm for $270/case and it is still in stock.

Given inflation, particularly in the cost of copper and other metals, over the past few years, I do not think it will get much cheaper but would not be surprised to see $240/case being the bottom. As always, any big push for gun control will drive the price way up.

If you have been waiting for prices to drop before you start stocking up for the next shortage its time to start buying. While prices might go down a little they could also go way up. If you keep waiting for prices to bottom out you will likely regret it when the next wave of panic buying occurs.

I bought some of the Norma ammo I think you were referencing a few weeks ago for $300/case with free shipping. Saving $40 would have been great but I am not going to lose sleep about that purchase. Hindsight is always 20/20.

When looking at old ammo prices remember free shipping is now the norm and it wasn't 5 years ago. And look at your order history from a few years ago instead of relying on memory. I did that and found the cheapest I ever bought 9mm in the past 10 years was for $170/case with an $18 shipping fee. Adjusting $188 in 2016 for inflation brings it to $232.

Pre pandemic I was buying Federal American Eagle and Remington green and white box for $9 per box - and I'd occasionally find it for $8 per box. Those were local Walmart and Academy prices.

That's $0.18 per round at the $9.00 per box prices point.

Walmart took itself out of the game and Academy is $19 per box.

The average inflation rate since then has been around 5.25% with a total price increase of around $16.6 percent, which equates to $10.48 per box and about $0.21 per round.

*That* should be the new normal. And it pretty much is, it just hasn't trickled down to the local store level yet.

And it won't *if enough people are dumb enough to keep buying it at price gouging prices*. It's not inflation keeping it high, it's plain old greed and a *free market* with too many dummies willing to pay way too much.

Right now you can get 115 gr brass cased ammo from Norma, PMC, S&B, MagTech, and Fiocchi, for around $0.21-$0.22 per round in larger lots and $0.24-0.26 per round in boxes of 50 on line.

Apples to apples Federal AE 115 gr is out there for $0.265 to $0.28 per round in 50 round boxes ($13.25-13.99).

Buying on line means eating some shipping but 5 boxes ships for $11.50 to me from Mid South. That brings the total to $16.29 per box, but still beats the local gouge by $3.70 per box of 50.

However I didn't see that shipping charge increase until I put 20 boxes in the cart, and then it was $13.50 - just $0.29 per round shipped. At 10 boxes it was $0.303 per round.

My advice, based on:
- the actual math of inflation rather than the myth;
- where the current local price should be;
- where the price currently is on line; and
- the remaining excessive local gouge;

is to buy on line in lots of 500 or so and leave the over priced stuff on the shelf until they figure out their high prices are reducing sales volume and costing them profits.

That's how prices come down in a free market economy. But it takes a fair number of prospective buyers with both brains and discipline.

9mm has stayed in stock in the 30 car range for awhile. I'd not be surprised if in good times we saw 25 cpr again, but I think if i wait to restock at the $135/case price point I last paid ill be waiting awhile.

Politics…Politics…Politics

Good news is with the Republicans in control of the House any new gun bills are doa.

State level is another thing altogether. As some Liberal States pass more gun laws that can drive price up in that region.

Fear…Fear…Fear

Feat is constantly being used by Politicians and the Media to manipulate the people. This is not going to change.

Safety, Safety…Safety

It's the economy stupid. Hard to feel safe with threat of job loses, high inflation driving up price of basic items like food and lack of trust in all levels of government.

As I reload my question is where are and cost of the primers? When primers come back then we know ammo manufacturers are catching up with demand.

Last "reasonable" purchase from Target Sports end of 2018. 4 years after exactly double. I don't see these $ levels happening again. Joe

When this question was asked about a year ago, I said the "new normal" would probably settle in at about 30¢ per round. Looks like my cracked old crystal ball was better than even I had thought! :D

While prices may come down, there are a lot of commercial "plinking" loads I won't use because they are so underpowered for a properly sprung pistol, i.e for self defense ammo. I lean towards 124gr ammo, the nearer NATO spec the better.

For those of us trying to account for inflation the same government agency that measures inflation has an online tool for comparing current prices to past prices. Might as well let them do the math.

CPI Inflation Calculator

The recent interlude of reappearing supplies and declining prices might just be "the good old days" next year.

The US military is scrambling to build more ammo for itself and for Ukraine, but old Army paperwork could get in the way

What do you expect when the armed forces are run as means to get the "right" number of people to O5-O6 level and large amounts of the defense budget are used as economic support for regions with the most influential politicos.

I'm OK paying 19 or 20 bucks for a box of 9m/m, 45acp, 40, and .223 are not too bad either. It's all the other calibers I wish would come down. I sold a nice M58 .41 Mag since the ammo was so expensive.

I just want other calibers like
.38spl, .45 acp and magnum rounds to come down to .50 cents.

SGammo has PMC and PPU 38 special for less than $.50 round. Its a bit cheaper if you buy in case quantities but still less than $.50 if you buy by the box. I bought some Norma 38 Special a couple of months ago and it was about the same price.

But both 44 Special and Magnum are still over $1/round. I thought about unpacking the reloading gear I haven't got around to selling. But if 44 stays as high as it is I will probably just sell my one 44 revolver instead.
