Deer Season!

Before the acorns started dropping I'd get 2,400 pics a week on just one camera. Now I'm lucky to get a couple dozen, all little scrawny ones. Now that we've had some rain acorns left on the ground should rot and they'll come back to the feeders/fields.

Rem 700 in .308 re-barreled with a Shilen 22" and Leupold 50mm.

Mike, it's good to see you posting again, amigo.

Got a doe during archery, but managed ti miss a really nice buck, at about 20 yards no less...:( So its off to the gun season, starting the Sat. after Thanksgiving.

This year, here in PA, I will be using my 6 inch Colt Anaconda with iron sights. Front sight ain't as sharp as it used to be, but still keep them on a paper plate at 50 yards.

I will also carry a rifle when hunting a couple areas that might offer a longer shot. This year it will be my old 1909 Argentine Mauser I sportsterized and converted to .35 Whelen back when I was a kid. It's got peeps, and a Leupold 2x7. So many newer rifles, I figured it's about time to shake the dust off some of the older, proven stuff.

I no longer hunt but I use to hunt a lot.

I've taken lots of deer and other large game over the years with 45/70 down to .243.

I mostly used Ruger's and Remington's my 2 favorite rifles' were a Ruger model 77 International in .308 and a Ruger model 77 in .243 with a Bell and Carlson composite stock both had Leopold scopes.

I'm still waiting for a decent buck to come by. I passed up a few smaller 6 and 8 points during archery season and again this firearm season, which started 15 November. I have a few 140+" class bucks on camera out back. If I shoot a buck it's gotta be big enough to go on the wall. I can take a doe just about any time I go out behind my house if I want to stock my freezer with GOOD venison. I use my T/C Pro Hunter .50 cal ML.

Started hunting with a Savage 340 bolt gun in 30-30. That was in 57. All I hunt now are Pheasants. My rifle I kept for up here is a Winchester Westerner 264 Mag. A pre 64 of course. Great all around cartridge. Use only 140 Nosler partitions @ 3175. Some great photos here. Up here tree stands, baiting, feeders, are not legal. If You want a deer, go find it.

Reading these posts and pondering the different calibers I am hearing, I feel like I'm reading a magazine from 1965 and I can't describe how much I LOVE IT! .250 Savage and .35 Whelen and .32 Win Special and more more more, this is awesome!

I will be hunting in West Virginia using a Remington Model 700 in 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser and a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in 257 Roberts. I like old cartridges. They worked long ago and continue to work today. What about you?

I traded into a beautiful original 6.5 x 55 Carl Gustaf model a couple years ago. I worked it into a "scout sniper" type firearm with a fancy scope mount that uses the original iron sight position and mounted a long eye relief 8X scope. I can shoot the "Swede" all day long in a t-shirt and keep all shots inside an inch (100yds) even out to 200yds (2" max spread), excellent caliber and ballistics. I've developed a 140grn ELD bullet load that would be devastating on a deer hunt if I chose to go there.
I got super lucky awhile back and scored close to 500rnds of Swedish Military ammo, it was marked "Prick Stella" or something to that effect, turns out it means "Sniper Bullet". They shoot lights out in the Swede, perfect bullet.

I don't gun hunt. I use a Ten Point X-bow. When I did it was before Ohio allowed straight walled cartridges, so I used a 50 Cal Thompson Center Encore topped off with a 3-9x Leupold scope. In Ohio shots are rarely long usually kept it on the 3x.

Best load was 2 Triple 7 pellets, and a 250 grain Sabot slug.

Shot a lot of does with it but never any bucks.

All my bucks were with the X bow in November during the rut.

Old Deer loads

Came across this when cleaning up today. My dad stopped hunting in the early 60's when I was a kid. He said too crowded and too many stupid people. NJ/Eastern PA. Box of 30-30 reloads from 1962. I still have his Winchester.

I don't hunt anymore, but for the last several years I used a 45-70 for deer hunting in the deep woods.
