What Deer Cartridge This Year

Hey Kid, why do they do that? And what qualifies? Would a 458 Win Mag qualify? How about a 44 Mag in a rifle?

And good luck everyone and hope you have a good hunting season.

There's a maximum case length restriction which eliminates a lot of fun stuff. One good thing that came out of this rule is it resurrected the .357 Maximum from the grave.

"A .35-caliber or larger rifle loaded with straight-walled cartridges with a minimum case length of 1.16 inches and a maximum case length of 1.80 inches."

All the above calibers are fine for deer. Myself, i would grab my old Win. 88 .308. For deer and Elk it has never failed me. Just my 2 cents .

The .308 is my all-time favorite hunting cartridge. It has plenty of power, yet, the recoil is rather mild.

My grandfather hunted all over America with a .308 rifle. He told me "if you can't do it with a .308, then you can't do it at all" (paraphrasing him). Indeed. A .308 will take most game in North America (although for Brown bear, that might be pushing your luck! Moose, too, unless you use real heavy bullets).

1959 .270 Winchester Model 70 for the fields and a Marlin 336 in 30-30 or a Browning BLR in .308 for the woods.

I didn't draw a deer tag this year but I did dry a cow elk tag. I filled that tag this morning. I shot it with last winters project...an Interarms Mark X .30-06 I restocked. If I had drawn a deer I would have used this rifle for that too.

Not much time to hunt this year, but the few times I did, I toted my unconverted 3 screw .44 flattop Ruger.
Two fifty grain 429421 cast on top of a healthy dose of 2400 of course.

Both of us here got a white tail. Wendy uses a Savage 99 in .250 and I use my Marlin 1895 in .45-70 for most all hunting. She asked if the deer was belled like a cat for me to even notice it? No problem on me hitting them but I admit to being a clueless Fudd on even noticing them nearby. :)
