Deer Season!

Firearms season doesn't open until the 30th. I have a favorite Savage 99 in .308 I'll be using (a cheap E model with rotary mag but no counter). I also have a PSA KS-47 7.62x39 for does once I fill the buck tag. My son just got back from California (Wildland firefighter, this is his offseason). He usually uses a 6.5 Creedmoor but decided he wanted to go back to his first rifle this year, another Savage 99 in .250.

This was a backyard buck a couple of years ago. This was in late July. If you look at his neck, he is still a young deer maybe 3.5 years. He was gonna be a bruiser.

Here some pics of the ones shot with that x-bow.

Old school for me. My father sporterized an 1903 Springfield and a 1938 8mm Mauser K98 in the 1950s. They were purchased right out of the American Rifleman as surplus military arms.

I have both and they shoot 2 MOA on a good day, but plenty accurate for less than 100 yards. I recall my father using heavy 220 grain Core-lock ammo in his 30-06 and dropped almost every buck he shot in its tracks. My 8mm was no slouch either!! Still have both, but gave up deer hunting for deer feeding 10 years ago. I sight them in every fall for old time sake, clean them and hang them in the gun rack until next season.

My 2 deer rifles are my Interarms MkX carbine in . 30-06 that I stocked myself from a Bishop blank back in the mid 80s, and the Remington 760 .30-06 given to me by a dear (now departed) neighbor of my parents. Primarily carrying the Remington this year since I bagged a doe last year with the Mk X.

Only saw 1 buck yesterday. After we came in to warm up and were enjoying coffee and donuts, a nice 4 pointer walked right through my cousin's backyard in full view of the dining room window, looked at us, smiled, and walked into the woods right towards where I sit!
