Deer Season!

I no longer hunt but when I did, we hunted deer in W. Virginia, Kentucky and here in Ohio. For each trip to WV and KY i always took 1 tried and true rifle (Ruger old model M77 in .270 Win) and then I usually took another rifle which I hadn't used before. Which rifle I used varied depending on where on the property I was hunting and how I was hunting (sitting in the woods in a tree stand, sitting just below the ridgeline of an old CRP field or stalking). In OH we initially were stuck with shotguns with slugs then they finally allowed pistols/revolvers of straight walled cartridges. Again what I used depended on how I was hunting. I really enjoyed trying something different and having the ability to harvest multiple deer each season in KY and OH allowed me to experiment and gave a great excuse to accumulate numerous hunting guns.

I just can't haul a beautiful walnut stock in the woods. My rifle of choice these days is a Ruger American in 450 Bushmaster with Leupold glass. Tack driver.

I got home from giving blood about noon today and had to take our pretty girl (Collie/Shepard Mix) out for her afternoon walk. After about 20 minutes we headed back to the house and she went on alert for the 8-point standing about 25 yards away. The deer watch us and slowly walked away. Nice looking buck. Good luck to all as you head to the woods.

I was in a local WaWa store early this morning and noticed a fellow in full camo, with a girl, about 8 or so, dressed in the same cammo. Dad and daughter no doubt heading out to a deer stand. I haven't hunted in years now, and really didn't even think about the season being open, but Thanksgiving is next week, so I suppose it is. I hope the young lady gets one.

I've never killed a deer with a rifle. About all of my deer hunting was done with shotguns, buckshot, and hounds. I dearly loved the sound of the chase.

Most of my deer were killed with a cheap, Sears-Roebuck 12 ga pump, using Remington, 3" number 1 buckshot.

I was able to drop a nice 8 point late in the afternoon on opening day of modern gun season. I decided to use my grandfather's Winchester 94 in .32 Winchester Special. It dropped in it's tracks with one shot from about 75 yards.

The rifle was made in the early 1950's and I wouldn't be surprised if the ammo I was using wasn't that old too.

Wish you all a safe and successful hunt! Gave it up over 15 years ago, but used a 257 wby mag overlooking farm field/county woods juncture.

Wife found a left-handed Browning Xbolt medallion in 30-06. Killed a doe with it last weekend. That's the rifle for open field. Marlin 444 for the short range woods hunting. Either rifle one shot equals a kill with correct placement.

30/06 is 125gr Hornady reduced recoil.
444 is Nosler 250 Gr @ 1850 fps.

Good luck everyone. Another 8 days of modern gun, the 8 days of muzzleloader. A new Nitrofire with vapr twist. 200 grain 45 sabot with 100 grain charge.

I'm thinking the modern rifles are, "old enough!"
Regards, Rick Gibbs
