Saw a few primers at Bass Pro today

I'm aware the new price is going to be double what the old one was. I still think those prices are being manipulated by the manufacturers (all two of them) who are happy to hear that you will happily pay that $100 a brick. My issue is that they are not on the shelves with any regularity or any rhyme or reason. At my reloading pace, I only buy a brick or two a year anyway. The extra $100 a year I spend on primers isn't going to even be noticed by me. If I saw a brick for $80, I'd grumble and pay it, too. Only problem is I haven't seen ONE box on a shelf in 2.5 years. The two bricks I bought were from Brownells or Midway about a year ago. Thirty seconds after my order was in, they were out of stock. One of the largest online retailers for primers was out of stock within minutes of them being IN stock. And to this day, even when they are IN stock, they are in limited supply. It's not like Brownells has truckloads to sell and they are immediately gone. Even their supply is limited.

Yeah, yeah. It's Ukraine and Covid's fault. And yeah, groceries and gas are more expensive , too. But I haven't had an ounce of trouble getting ANYTHING else other than hand sanitizer at the start of the pandemic, and even THAT calmed down in a few months.

You are contradicting yourself. Again.

There are a lot more than two primer manufacturers.

Other than what I've bought from the shop I work part time in, I've bought primers for similar enough all in costs that I don't recall any difference. FWIW, my shops price was $75.99/brick last I bought some there.

Primers are available on line with regularity.

You can find a couple million here:

Until now, only two companies controlled the market for primers in the United States. Olin Corporation through their ownership of Winchester and Vista Outdoor with their ownership of Federal, Remington Ammunition, and CCI. A third manufacturer intends to to begin producing by 2023.

And I just checked Midway and Brownells. Not one small pistol primer in stock. Maybe their employees are buying them before they can make it to the website.

Yeah, I'm not paying 90 bux. So far I have enough to hold out for quite a while. I've never believed the current prices are anything other than inflated due to demand. OK. But not me. Not now. Patience fellas....

Just typed in CCI small pistol and came up with a bunch. $130 a brick. Add in shipping and hazmat and were at north of $150. Hell of a deal. But as I said, not a box has been seen at my local shops.

I know they're out there. At 4 times the old price. Certainly not at my local shops like they used to be.

I just looked up large rifle primers there and I could get a brick right now for $149 total after shipping, hazmat and tax. That's still better than the last brick I bought for $165 total. I'm not low enough to order more yet but if that price remains when I need more I'll place an order. It sucks but you do what you have to if you want to keep shooting.

I was at my favorite LGS yesterday where I was able to buy two lbs of BL-C powder @ $39.95/lb, and I asked if he saw any light at the end of the tunnel on primers and he said no, he still has no idea when he might be able to get any.

Lol…yeah, if you buy 500 bricks. Anyone have $38,750 lying around?

Hahaha.

On the other hand, group buy?

First search showing them by the brick. Here they are at $79.79, all in at about $106. But the shipping is flat rate up to 48lbs, so a couple of bricks of the same or different primers would average down the costs to well under $100.

Ginex Small Pistol Primers – 1,000 Count , Southern Munitions

I bought a single package of 5,000 from Mid South a couple of months ago with the imputed brick cost of about $75, shipped. I suspect that if I spent more than a minute searching I could match or beat that.

I stopped by the reloading supply in Clearwater on the way home yesterday. He had primers, but limit 3 trays of each type and $14 per tray. I did get some powder I needed, though.

I'm busting his chops because his buying them before they hit the shelves prevents consumers from getting them. The same customers whose purchases allow that store to exist. Me getting a free slice of pizza didn't prevent the next customer from getting theirs. Me standing in the back of a movie theater didn't prevent somebody else from watching it. Me getting free admission to the Bronx Zoo didn't mean somebody else couldn't get in.

And as I said, I knew I was getting over. But I wasnt screwing anybody else by getting over.

I know you feel you cost no one else and you have convinced yourself you didn't cost anyone anything...but you did every time you took advantage of one of those "perks". I had many tings offered to me free many times working in a fire dept. Some in the dept may have taken advantage of the offers. I just didn't. I just didn't feel right taking advantage of a business just because of my position. That said...I have had people ...neighbors... give us coffee cocoa water etc when on a fire. And we were appreciative of the gift. Cold night, hot day...a hard job and appreciative folks. I've done that too for others helping a neighbor. I did get free pizza at Sam's the other day though. ...but I was just a customer with a quick wit!

No, I didn't. Standing in the back of the movie theater cost nobody anything, and neither did a free slice of pizza. And even if he added 5 cents to a slice to make up for the "cop discount", and FD SURELY took their share of freebies, nobody was deprived of anything.

Either way, it was early on in my career and a different time. If I was a rookie cop today, I wouldn't take a free cup of water.

As I said..you are convinced. But I like that last sentence...and think I really agree. And to be honest I didn't want to be a cop way back when(they tried to make us Public safety and wanted cross training. Worked for a while in fire investigation. 3 months of carrying a gun was enough for me. I was always happy to see the PoLeece. Thanks for being there. Would you retired guys think you'd want to be a cop now?? I don't even think I'd want to be a FF in a large city. And especially NOT a paramedic again!

I can see how some of the current posts might cause a possible "disagreement". Please try to keep everything civil, I don't want to have to close this thread.

Thank you...

Back on topic…and things are looking pretty bleak

I'm thinking you are going to be wishing you bought them.

And you, sir, may have a crystal ball!

I went back by the same Bass Pro and this is what that same shelf now looks like. Maybe just because of the holidays, but it definitely didn't give me a good feeling.

Reloading as it once was is over and it's never coming back. Early three years into this and buying are amazed when they see a couple of boxes at a major retailer for 3 times the old price, and regret it when they don't buy them. Anybody who spends money getting into reloading now is a moron. I don't know how Hornady and Dillon are still in business. I'm sure their profits have gone way down.

I have waited almost 2 years to find .458 Hornady 350 grain FP bullets. Before all this I almost certainly could have found them at any time. I do not have a crystal ball but the reloading world is in a mess and may not recover.

I was out of town yesterday and a regional chain store had primers for $6.10, in October of 21, the same store was $5.25. $6.10 is high, but at least they weren't like two local shops trying to charge $9.50 and the other $10.00. The $10 guy claimed his cost was $6.00, but he's a known liar, so who knows.

At that price, I would have cleaned them out!
