Are people that stupid and/or arrogant today?

Stupid.....no.
Arrogant....yes
Moreover, it's simply I'll do what I want. I have the right. Nobody's going to tell me different.

The 6:00 news confirmed that there is a driving ban. Period. No driving unless you are a nurse going to the hospital, or if you have an emergency.

So here were the stories:

* just sightseeing to see all the snow.
* supermarket trip because we didn't think to shop during the 5 day period they told us about the storm.
* Forklift on a sidestreet clearing an abandoned car - others were trying to drive around it to go to a friend's house.

People are morons....

We may have too much information. My local weather report cites 5 different "scientific" models: North American, European, spaghetti bowl and I forget what else. On any given day they will predict a range from "light flurries" to "snomageddon" and temps from 30 to 30 below. The weatherdude then grins and says "I like model...". You take your pick and it's not your fault if you chose the wrong one: you were just following the science.

It doesn't help that every other week the weather people declare we're about to have the storm of the century and then it turns out to be no big deal after all. It's like the boy who cried wolf. People begin to tune out the warnings and decide to drive to Canada during a real blizzard.

4 people killed in the pile up on Ohio Turnpike...my question: it was a Level 3 storm meaning NO travel on roads unless emergency...so WHY did the Ohio Turnpike allow ANY vehicles to enter the Turnpike in the first place???

Turnpikes are a law unto themselves! They also have their own snow removal, so they say when their road is closed. I guess some late night advertising lawyers will take them to court and "Win" millions of dollars for "The True Victims", "and stick it to the man again!"

I got caught out in the blizzard of 78. That storm hit fast...really fast.

Yeah I was 20 and never watched the news. Only had to drive about 20 or so miles to get home, but it took me over 3 hours. I'd just moved from Cincinnati to Fairfield and didn't know the roads too well.

I was driving my dad's 66 Fairlane with steel studded snow tires. Never had a single problem, except for most of the roads being blocked by people that did have problems.

These folks have always been around - maybe a little more prevalent now.

Back on the job, we used to refer to them as an "entertainment value".

Describes my neighbor to a "T". Last Saturday our shared driveway was a solid sheet of ice about 2" thick and since it was clear at their kids house, 70 miles to the south, they thought they could take their little tin can car and somehow make it up the semi steep but iced over driveway to reach the sanded county road. The wife and I saw them coming down their part of the driveway, watched them slide around teh 90* corner and point their spam can car up the icy hill and make it about 50' before they started sliding back down the hill with all four tine tires still spinning forward.

We are standing in the living room watching this and I turned to my wife and say that I hope to heck they don't slide down onto our paved driveway then go off the edge and through the white vinyl three rail fence. That is exactly what they did! Since they had my driveway blocked off for who knows how long I figured I better try to get them out of the way so 45 minutes later with a tow strap hooked to their little rear receiver hitch and a the other end onto my hay load ratchet strap I got them back up the bank and onto the paved part of the driveway and headed back towards their part of the driveway. He sat in the car and asked what I thought he should do and I said get going back up the driveway towards his house as far as he can then walk home.

He made it out of my driveway, back around teh corner and after about 30' spun out but at least he was out of the way and on the safe edge where he could leave the "car". He proceeded to get out of the car and suddenly he was as* over tea kettle with his feet pointed to the sky and with his head warming the sheet ice. Once I saw he was only man card pride hurt I thought to myself - now you know what I've been trying to stand up on while getting your stupid car unstuck!

Good thing I have some spare 16' vinyl rails!

I must admit I'm a bit surprised by this thread...we seem to have short memories. If we think this weather brings out the stupid or arrogant in people, we're forgetting our recent history.

A little less than three years ago, we had a deadly respiratory virus spreading throughout our society, and a fair percentage of Americans thought it was hoax; refused to take common-sense measures to keep it from spreading; demonized public officials who were trying to save lives; and acted as if it would never affect them personally.

Sometimes I think being stupid or arrogant is a prerequisite for being an American...

No one wants to disappoint the family and say, "We can't make it home for Christmas."

The interstate highways in many northern states have physical gates that close them in storms like this past one. I90 was closed at one time from Rapid City, SD to Albert Lea, MN., just under 500 miles.

We live in a society where nothing bad is supposed to happen, nobody gets hurt or even their feelings hurt, no responsibility, and when things go wrong, people sue to get their way. We try to child proof the world and make everything safe.

Many in our society today cannot deal with adversity in any way.

It is stunning how quickly lessons have unlearned, and many times never taught at all.
