I read those articles, too, about gas stove tops causing pollution so maybe they should be banned. One of the articles, fine print, said the issue was more about leaking valves/connections than burning gas.
I don't like electric stove tops. Too hard to control the heat, and takes too long to get up to temp. Maybe okay for a soup you want to simmer for a couple of hours, but for an omelette or a steak, forget it.
We bought a condo, more of a townhouse, in town in 2016 with nothing but electric available. No hook up for gas. Getting a permit for hook up, and HOA agreement, was iffy. So we installed a nice, new Bosch glass cooktop... which we very rarely used.
Our solution was to get a 15KW Iwatani butane burner. Bought butane by the case from Amazon. Cost us maybe ~ $25 a month or so, but it worked great. Used it daily. Also easy to move out to the patio for a steak or fish without smoking/smelling up the house.
Sold that place and bought a house with gas in the 'burbs in 2020. Love the gas range. Just upgraded it. Still use the Iwatani on the patio or in the garage when it's raining.
Never lived in a house with gas so it's hard to comment. When we had our home we recently moved in to remodeled we had an induction cooktop installed. It's awesome…heats super fast. The only downside is it somewhat limits the cookware that can be used on it…only something magnetic will work. My favorite fry pan has a copper bottom and won't work with it. Once our new outdoor grill is installed I can use it there.
Thanks for the report. I've read about induction, and considered it for my townhouse, but have never known anyone with one. Sounds pretty good. That sounds like a good solution if stuck with electric only.
(Re your favorite pan, try that Iwatani butane burner. I think now about $100, but they are much better than cheaper versions. More heat and better build quality. 15KW is more than most stove top burners, which are typically 12KW and less. Tho my new stove top has an 18KW burner.)
