'The very capable Kenny Jay,' a pro wrestler who gained fame for always losing, dies

Before we had pervasive Metropolitan government in the Twin Cities, we had mosquito control, specifically the Five County Mosquito Control District. We also had rasslin', the AWA, or American Wrestling Alliance. The champion, whoever he was at the time, was known to us as The World's Heavyweight Wrestling Champion of the World of the Five County Mosquito Control District.

As far as I knew, Kenny Jay never held that title. However, I heard a story today, perhaps apocryphal, about how the Very Capable Kenny Jay once held the title for a day, or maybe less, after then-champion Nick Bockwinkel got knocked out by his own champion belt, allowing Sodbuster, as Jay was also known, to take the pin and thus the title.

I grew up in Nebraska and as a kid I loved wrestling.

The Dusek Brothers, Joe and Ernie, were old rasslers from Omaha and the did the promotions in our area but worked closely with Vern Gagne who supplied the "talent".

I saw Kenny Jay rassle Scrap Iron Gadasky at a show once for "The Loser's Trophy", a crowd pleaser.

In '69-'70 I worked part time at the Cincinnati Gardens with the "set-up/tear-down" crews for all the different events including Big Time Wrestling.

The wrestlers were a most interesting group with a blend of coarse, crass, crude and comedian.

I was 6'1" and 185 lbs at the time. Next to them I was a pipe cleaner.
